Rhode Island Driver Abuses Inhalants, Drags Police Office behind Car

On the morning of Thursday October 29th, several
police officers in Warwick, Rhode Island responded to a report of an erratic
driver. They arrived at a local gas station where they found a 27 year old
woman who seemed confused in a car that had two blown out tires. Furthermore,
the claim to have found huffing materials in the vehicle.
Reportedly, the driver put the car in gear after an officer
tried to turn off the engine. This caused an officer to briefly get caught on
the car. Fortunately he was not injured since he got loose after approximately
ten feet. After this incident the police took the woman into custody and where
she currently is facing several charges including DUI, reckless driving and
possession of toxic substances.
Wisconsin Woman Arrested after Driving Under the Influence of Inhalants
On the morning of October 29th, a 41 year old
woman from Green Bay Wisconsin was sentenced to 18 months in prison for
operating a vehicle while under the influence of an inhalant. The court cited
the fact that she was convicted of four separate charges of driving under the
influence prior to this latest incident for the stiff sentence.
After she is released, she will serve three years of
extended supervision. Also she will have her license suspended for three years.
Additionally, the Brown County judge ruled that she must have an ignition
interlock installed into her car for two years afterwards.

Florida Doctor Crashes Car after Huffing, Knocks out Power at Local Supermarket
On the morning of Tuesday October 27th, a 61 year
old physician in Saint Augustine crashed his car into a power pole. This left a
major grocery store in the area without electricity. Police responding to the
scene reported that the man in question was huffing computer cleaner.
According to the police report, he was fairly compliant with
the arresting officers’ requests. However, he was physically unable to stand in
order to carry out the field sobriety tests. However, the doctor was eventually
taken to the county jail. From there he was charged with DUI with Property
Damage and Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Property Damage.
Plano Authorities Suspect a Car fire was Started by Aerosol Abuse
Upon witnessing a car fire in a local parking lot, Plano firefighters
believed that the situation warranted an investigation. According to their reports, the car contained
several cans of computer cleaner that were likely used by the driver to become
intoxicated. These possess a chemical called difluoroethane which is highly flammable.
Therefore, they believe the car ignited when the driver tried to light a
cigarette after abusing inhalants.
At the time of the incident, the driver was seen running
from the burning car. However, local authorities soon found him. After taking
him into custody, they quickly brought him to Parkland Hospital in order to
treat his non-life threatening burns.

Minnesota Driver Pleads Guilty in Huffing Related Crash
A 26 year old man from Hastings Minnesota has pleaded guilty
to criminal vehicular operation during a court appearance on Monday October 19th.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred on July 26th in
which he collided head on with another car. The other driver was taken to the
hospital with back injuries.
Although he denied drinking that day, he admitted to having
taken several “hits” from the aerosol cans in the back of his car on his way to
work. His current charges count as a gross misdemeanor. Therefore, he will be
required to serve 21 days in jail and spend two years on probation. Furthermore,
he will have to undergo a chemical evaluation and stay off alcohol and
controlled substances.

Washington Woman Hospitalized and Arrested Following Theft of Canned Air
A 31 woman in western Washington State was found passed out
in a public bathroom on Saturday October 17th after huffing a significant
amount of canned air. Once taken into custody, the police brought her to
Providence Centralia Hospital.
Furthermore, the police cited the woman in question on
suspicion of third-degree theft and inhaling toxic fumes.

Family in West Michigan Tries to Raise Awareness about Inhalant Abuse
A family from the Kalamazoo area has been on a mission to raise
awareness about inhalant abuse. This has been in response to what they describe
as the troubles of a 30 year old member of their family who has been addicted
to inhalants for several years.
One of their main policy objectives is reducing access to
potential inhalants in retail stores. As a precedent, they point to
restrictions on Sudafed purchases.

solvents and noxious substances on October 12th, 2015. This occurred

Man from Poulsbo, Washington Dies after Inhaling Air Duster
A 29 year old man from Poulsbo, Washington fell into cardiac
arrest subsequently and died on Saturday October 10th, 2015. He had
been taken to Harrison Medical Center after police took him into custody. As of
the time the story was written, the police were withholding his name from the
public until his next of kin could be located.
According to local reports, he was first discovered in a
public restroom by the on duty store attendants. They reported that he was
inhaling fumes in a stall to the police. Once the authorities arrived, they
took him to the hospital where he was initially seen to be in relatively good
health other than some scratches from an unrelated previous incident. However,
his condition soon rapidly worsened and he passed away in a matter of hours
Man Arrested after Huffing Canned Air in a Park’s Portable Toilet
On Saturday October 10th, a 28 year old man in
Ferndale, Michigan was arrested after police found him in a portable toilet
with a can of compresses air. They arrived at the scene after witnesses reported
a seeing a man enter the restroom and not leaving. Additionally, they claimed
to hear the sound of a spray can and subsequently, a thud.
Officers reported that the man called out that he “was
sleeping” in an extremely slurred manned after they knocked on the door. Later
he was taken into custody and protested that he “only inhaled one can.” After
he was cleared medically, he was issued a citation for abuse of inhalants under
a local ordinance. Additionally, his parole officer was notified of the
incident.

New Jersey Man Arrested after Huffing on Courthouse Grounds
On Friday October 9th, a 39 year old man from Toms
River, New Jersey was observed inhaling the contents of an aerosol can on the
grounds of the Ocean County Courthouse. The suspect was first seen by a local sheriff
who called for assistance with arresting him at 9:44 A.M. According to police
reports, the man was walking strangely and attempted to hide the can of
computer cleaner in the sleeve of his shirt.
After his arrest, the man was charged with possession of
drug paraphernalia and use or possession with intent to use. Furthermore, the Sheriff's
office discovered that he was wanted on two probation warrants for bail
violations.
Florida Man Sentenced after Huffing Computer Cleaner and Attacking Police
A 34 year old man in Springfield, Florida was arrested on
March 14, 2015 for inhaling the contents of a can of computer cleaner in a cemetery.
As the police took him into custody, he repeatedly tried to kick and lash out
at the officers. These acts of physical aggression continued even after the
police used a stun gun on him.
After this incident, he was charged with inhaling a harmful
chemical substance and resisting arrest with violence. After pleading no
contest, he was sentenced to just over one year in prison on Friday October 9th,
2015.
Michigan Man Found Huffing in Car While Waiting for Girlfriend
On October 9th 2015, a 19 year old man was
allegedly found inhaling the contents of an aerosol can. The police report that
the man drove with a suspended license to a store and brought a can of air
duster. He then drove to a nearby parking lot and proceeded to inhale the
contents while waiting for his girlfriend to finish work.
Local shoppers witnessed what the man was doing and reported
it to the police. Once they arrived, they called paramedics out of concern for
the young man’s medical state. After he was cleared, the alleged perpetrator
was taken into custody and charged with prohibited use of a chemical agent and
driving without a valid license.

Tennessee Man Arrested for Huffing and Driving

A 35 year old man from Rockvale, Tennessee man was taken into custody
on Tuesday night at approximately 6:40 PM after allegedly huffing and driving. While
responding to a call regarding someone having a seizure behind the wheel, a
local officer claims to have witnessed the man spraying canned duster into his
nose while pulled over to the side of the road.
Upon confronting him, the officer claims that the man
refused to cooperate. After gaining access to the car by breaking through a
window, the Tennessee man reportedly put up a brief struggle against the
arresting officer. From there he was taken first to a hospital and then to
jail. Currently, he is being charged with resisting arrest and driving under the influence. The bond
is set at $4,000.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Deputies Report Increased Inhalant Abuse
On October 6th 2015, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s
Deputies reported that they have investigated three separate instances of
residents abusing inhalants while driving. The first two instances resulted in
the drivers hitting trees. However, the third incident resulted in the driver
crashing into a utility pole on Sunday October 4th.
The crashes occurred in Jamestown Township,
Georgetown Township, and Coopersville respectively. The latest suspect suffered
serious injuries, had his car totaled, and has been charged with driving while
intoxicated.

Woman Found Dead in Delaware Motel: Inhalant Abuse-related

A 27 year old woman was found dead on Saturday October 3rd
2015. The police were alerted of this occurrence by her 31 year old boyfriend
who claimed to have found her in a motel in a Murfreesboro, Delaware motel
room.
The boyfriend told the authorities that the woman had
inhaled duster the night before. However, the exact cause and manner of death
has yet to have been reported by the local medical examiner’s office. Currently
the Murfreesboro police department is considering the incident to be part of an
“unintended death investigation.”

Connecticut Man Bites State Trooper after Inhaling Dust Cleaner
A 25 year old man from Somers, Connecticut was arrested on
the night of Thursday October 1st 2015 and was charged with assaulting
a police, interfering with an officer and resisting arrest, disorderly conduct,
interfering with an emergency call and third-degree assault. The police originally
arrived after receiving two 911 calls from family members who reported that he
had started throwing objects and smashed a phone when a relative tried to call
911. This allegedly began after he had inhaled the contents of a can of dust
cleaner.
When the police attempted to put the young man, in
handcuffs, he bit an officer and began spitting. Due to his violent actions,
the police responded by using pepper spray. The man was arraigned in Rockville
Superior Court on Friday October 2nd and was held on $50,000 bond.
He is due back in court later in the month.

Blacksburg, Virginia Concert to Raise Money for Anti-Huffing Awareness

A concert was held on Sunday September 13th 2015
at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church in order to raise money for inhalant abuse
awareness. This was triggered by the death of a 41-year-old husband and father
of two young children from inhalant abuse. The man was found dead clutching a
can of computer cleaner. According to the family, he was suffering from PTSD
from his most recent combat tour and had a long history of risk taking.
The concert itself was set up in order to raise money. Admission
was free, although attendees were highly encouraged to donate to a memorial
fund. Even before the event, it had raised over $8,500. The funds are
designated for educational programs related to the issue and will be
concentrated in Montgomery County Public Schools.
