Police in Lacey, New Jersey arrested a man for stealing two cans of duster and huffing one of them in a store bathroom. They found the 31-year-old on the floor, conscious with minor injuries. He has been charged with shoplifting and using an inhalant.

New Jersey Man Arrested after Huffing on Courthouse Grounds

On Friday October 9^th, a 39 year old man from Toms River, New Jersey was observed inhaling the contents of an aerosol can on the grounds of the Ocean County Courthouse. The suspect was first seen by a local sheriff who called for assistance with arresting him at 9:44 A.M. According to police reports, the man was walking strangely and attempted to hide the can of computer cleaner in the sleeve of his shirt.  

After his arrest, the man was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and use or possession with intent to use. Furthermore, the Sheriff's office discovered that he was wanted on two probation warrants for bail violations.

New Jersey Woman Arrested for Huffing and Driving

A 36-year-old New Jersey woman was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, possession of toxic chemicals and reckless driving.  Police responded to reports of a car accident.  Officers found the woman standing next to her car holding a can of computer duster spray.  Police were familiar with the woman due to a recent arrest for huffing duster.  In the vehicle police found three more cans of duster.  A witness said the woman's vehicle crossed over the curbed median and across opposing traffic lanes before hitting a lightpole, causing it to fall into the road.

Fatal New Jersey Crash Linked to Inhalant Abuse

A 48-year-old New Jersey man who was charged with running his pickup truck through a farmers market and dragging a woman to her death in August is now facing additional charges of driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Police received the results of toxicology tests from the state police laboratory.  The man has been held on a $200,000 bail since the day of the accident, August 10th.  It was on this day that his truck crashed through a police barricade set up on the street of the market.  His truck slammed through at least three stalls belonging to six vendors, all who were just starting to pack up their merchandise after the market closed.  His truck also dragged a 58-year-old woman to her death.

New Jersey Woman Arrested Again for Huffing

A 29-year-old New Jersey was arrested for disorderly conduct, shoplifting, inhaling toxic chemicals, and being under the influence.   The woman repeatedly inhaled computer duster spray.  Police responded to a local Walmart for a report that a woman was lying on the ground. Police found the woman in the parking lot.  Witnesses said they saw the woman huffing from the duster before falling to the ground.  The woman tried to huff from the duster again but someone pulled the can from her hands.  She was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Later that evening officers were called back to Walmart on a call of a woman stumbling around and lying in the grass.  Officers found the same woman and determined that she was under the influence of dusters again.  She was taken to the hospital for treatment and officers notified crisis intervention in an attempt to protect her from harming herself.  The woman is facing two counts of disorderly conduct, shoplifting, inhaling toxic chemicals, and being under the influence.

Test Results Awaited in New Jersey Man's Death After Huffing

New Jersey police are waiting for test results to determine the cause of death of a man who passed out after inhaling computer cleaner.

The 41 year-old man was found passed out in the back seat of a taxi cab.  He was arrested, examined, and then released.   Hours later police received a call for medical assistance.  They found the man in cardiac arrest and began performing CPR.  He was taken to a local hospital where he died about two hours later.  The medical examiner will determine the cause of death and is awaiting the results of a toxicology report to determine if inhalants were involved in his death.

New Jersey woman arrested three times in one day for huffing

A 29-year-old Long Valley woman was repeatedly arrested on Saturday, June 28^th for inhaling computer cleaner at several stores in a Walmart shopping center. Police found the woman in the bathroom of a department store with a can of computer duster in her hand. Instead of releasing the can as instructed, the woman inhaled from it. She was arrested and charged with inhaling a controlled dangerous substance.

Later that day, police were called back to the shopping center for the same woman who was passed out in the grass and holding another can of computer duster. After being advised to put down the can, she inhaled from it and passed out from the fumes. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital and charged with inhaling a controlled dangerous substance and for shoplifting two cans of computer duster from the Walmart.

After her discharge from the hospital, the same woman was found in the bathroom of another store inhaling computer duster. After being told by police to put down the can and open the door, the woman inhaled the substance. The police kicked the door in to gain access and found the woman unresponsive. The police began rescue breathing and called the emergency squad. The woman began to breathe and was transported to the hospital again. Police have contacted Crisis Intervention to offer the woman counseling and assistance.

Tackling Inhalant Abuse in New Jersey

Via the Consumer Specialty Products Association's NewsStream, an update on our recent inhalant abuse prevention activities in New Jersey: 

Colleen Creighton, executive director of the Alliance for Consumer Education (ACE), and Owen Caine, CSPA’s Manager, State Affairs, East Region, met with a number of New Jersey state senators and representatives June 23 in Trenton. On the agenda was inhalant abuse, specifically legislation that would include inhalants under DUI laws.

Creighton and Caine met with Senator Steven Oroho, who is sponsoring Senate bill S2064 "Kimmie's Law" and with state Assemblywoman Marlene Caride, who is sponsoring a companion bill.  Nearly 10 percent of New Jersey teens have used inhalants, according to recently released CDC data.

 

Creighton distributed ACE inhalant kits and provided additional insight on the issue of inhalant abuse to Oroho, Caride and other lawmakers. 

 ACE looks forward to working with communities across New Jersey in addressing this important issue.

A woman was arrested for huffing, her second arrest in two weeks with both incidents occurring on the Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath. She was arrested on charges of being under the influence of and in the possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

A 31-year-old New Jersey woman was arrested on charges of being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance.  Police were called about a "disoriented" woman.  The responding officer said, "it appeared that the woman had been 'huffing chemicals in order to get high.'"

New Jersey Man Arrested on Huffing Charges --Three Times in One Week

A 30 year old man was arrested three times last week on inhalant abuse related charges.  

First, on Thursday afternoon he was arrested after a car accident. 24 aerosol cans were found in his car and he wasn’t even aware he had crashed his car.  He was charged with: possession of a toxic chemical for the purpose of causing intoxication, being under the influence of a toxic chemical, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, failure to maintain a lane of traffic, failure to exhibit registration and failure to exhibit an insurance card. He was released.

Then on Friday afternoon police found him slumped over the steering wheel of his car in a Walmart parking lot. He admitted he had been huffing in his car and was charged with: DWI, possessing a toxic chemical to cause intoxication, and being under the influence of a toxic chemical. He was again released after being charged.

Third, on Saturday afternoon police responded to a report of someone inhaling something in a Walmart bathroom. They found the man nearby and charged him with possession of toxic chemicals and being under the influence of a toxic chemical. He was processed and released.

New Jersey Man Arrested for Inhalants- Sixth Time in Six Weeks

A 30 year old man was arrested after an inhalant abuse related incident, his sixth inhalant arrest in six weeks.  Police responding to a call of a stolen vehicle found him in the car huffing a can of computer duster that he had allegedly just stolen from a ShopRite. He was charged with receiving stolen property, shoplifting, being disorderly, and huffing. 

New Jersey Man Arrested for Abusing Inhalants Four Times in Two Days

A 30 year old man was arrested at least four times in two days for abusing inhalants. On November 1, police saw the man inhaling from a spray can. He was charged with inhaling toxic chemicals and littering.  Just a mere 2 hours later police were called after the man was found hiding between two cars inhaling from a can. He was again charged with inhaling toxic chemicals and littering and sent for medical evaluation.

Upon leaving the hospital he went across the road to BJ’s Wholesale Club and inhaled a can of computer spray without paying for it. He passed out before he could inhale the second can. He was charged with possession of toxic chemicals and shoplifting and sent back to the medical center.  

Two days later police were called to a Walmart where the man had become violent after huffing computer duster. He was subdued by customers and was charged with inhaling a toxic chemical, shoplifting and disorderly conduct. He was taken to the medical center and then jail.

New Jersey Man Hufffing Inhalants While Ridng a Motorized Wheelchair

Twice in two days police have responded for a report of a man riding a motorized wheelchair while abusing inhalants.

On June 29^th officers responding to the report found a man inside a home huffing computer duster. They noticed the wheelchair outside contained cans of computer duster and they heard “what sounded like the dispensing of an aerosol can coming from inside the apartment.”  Through the screen door they saw the man huffing and when they tried to handcuff him he took the “can with his free hand, put it in his mouth and inhaled the contents once more.” He was treated at the hospital but not arrested.

The following morning at 6:15 am, police responded to the call and found the same man inhaling from a can of computer duster. He wasn’t arrested but police are considering submitting the report for “charges of abusing a harmful intoxicant.” The man told police he abuses inhalants for pain.
