Aleknagik, AK: A 14-year-old teen was reported missing and later found dead this past Friday. Police located him on the city dock next to an open can of gasoline. An autopsy request has been submitted, but officials believe that huffing contributed to his death.

Propane Ruled As Cause of Death in Alaska

Alaska:
A 31 year old man is dead after
apparently huffing propane. We was reported missing on Saturday and on Sunday
his uncle found his body on the top of four foot propane tanks. Alaska State
Troopers classified the death as accidental because they did not believe the
man intended to kill himself.”

Nitrous Oxide Found at Murder Scene

Officers say substance abuse may have played a role in the deaths of two Alaskan residents earlier this month. A 38-year-old male was fatally shot by a State Trooper after he aggressively lunged toward an officer with a knife. Police were dispatched to the man's residence following a 911 call made from within the home. According to reports, officers discovered the fatally stabbed body of a 66-year-old woman inside the home, identified as the man’s mother. Police believe inhalants were a factor in the brutal murder of the 66-year-old, as officers discovered thousands of small nitrous oxide canisters scattered throughout the home. The investigation is ongoing.

Man Brain Damaged by Huffing Remains in Institution

The Alaska Supreme Court just ruled that a “man who damaged his brain by huffing chemicals must remain in a mental institution against his will, even though treatment is unlikely to help him.”
The article notes that he “damaged his frontal lobe through huffing gasoline fumes and other inhalants” and that “if he is discharged from the institute, he will go back to huffing.”
The doctor wrote "He cannot perceive and understand reality. His judgment is extremely poor and he is unable to make rational decisions, as shown by his continued desire to inhale toxic substances."

Rural life opens U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services’ eyes

Last week a member of President Bush’s Cabinet, Mike Leavitt (head of the Department of Health and Human Services) toured a Western Alaska village to get a better understanding of the problems that help leave Alaska Natives riddled with health problems.
“This is just unacceptable,” he said, as he stared at a festering sewage lagoon on the edge of Kwethluk, a Yup’ik village of about 750.
Frothy, olive-colored “Honeybucket Lake,” as residents call it, is where the village dumps its feces because, like dozens of rural Alaska communities, it lacks flush toilets and running water.
“When it floods, it seeps out,” mixing with floodwaters that reach town and turn dirt roads into a soupy mess, said tribal administrator Herman Evan.
He and other village leaders suggested that may be one reason children often miss school with diarrhea, fevers and other illnesses. Also, the lack of tap water makes it difficult to wash hands – most villagers draw their drinking water from the Kwethluk River.
The day started with a visit to a behavioral health center in Bethel, where psychiatrists, teachers and other experts help troubled boys recover from a history of huffing gas and other inhalants. Toward the end of the day, Leavitt said the trip gave him an eye-opening view of village life that will lead to better-informed decisions as he reviews budgets totaling in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
