Actress, Skye McCole Bartusiak, who played Mel Gibson's daughter in "The Patriot" passed away in July 2014. Tests revealed today show that the 21-year-old actress had muscle relaxers, painkillers, and a chemical refrigerant difluoroethane in her system at the time of death. "Difluoroethane is a colorless gas used as a refrigerant, something huffed to get high." Her death has been ruled an accidental overdose.

California Restaurant Suspects Vandalism Due to Huffing

A California restaurant owner discovered vandalism to his restaurant may have been caused by those looking to get high.
The restaurant owner, who had just opened his restaurant two weeks earlier, noticed that his restaurant seemed unusually warm one morning. The owners discovered that someone had snipped an air-conditioner copper line that carried a refrigerant fluid. The restaurant had to close for most of the day costing the owners $1,000 in sales and $400 in repairs.
Two days later the line was cut again. The owner originally thought the pipe has been cut for metal theft, but wondered why the pipe had not been taken. However, the manager of the air conditioning repair company offered a more plausible motive: huffing. "They will huff the refrigerant to get high," the air conditioning company manager said. The restaurant owner had a steal cage installed over his unit to help prevent further incidents.

Babysitter Caught Huffing From Air Conditioning Unit in Ohio

A 19 year old female babysitter was supposed to be watching an 8 year old boy and a 9 year old girl. Instead, she was caught huffing refrigerant out of a central air conditioning unit this past weekend. Police responded to the incident.

On February 28th, her mom received a call from her family telling her they had found the girl on the bathroom floor of her grandmother’s house, where she lived, and she wasn’t breathing. Four days later she was taken off life support. The girl’s cousins admitted to having huffed previously and noted it was a common occurrence in their middle school.

Six high school students are facing charges after they were found vandalizing a home air conditioning unit in an attempt to get high.
The homeowner heard noises on the back deck and saw teens “rolling around on the ground, having a hard time standing up” and “The one kid who was laying behind the unit had his mouth against it and just sucking it in.” He took photos of the teens from the window and when he went outside to confront them they were disoriented and dazed.
When the teens ran off they left their book bags behind which is how the police were able to identify them. They have been charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass, destruction of property and theft. The home owner notes it is the second time in two weeks he has caught teens huffing the refrigerant out of his air conditioner.

A 37-year old man who last fall had been charged with felony theft plead guilty last month in court. The man is accused of inhaling refrigerant from his neighbors’ air conditioners to get high. The theft is considered a felony because the estimated repair costs total nearly $1,800.
Police responded to a call regarding a trespasser and found the man unconscious by the air conditioner. When he came to the man admitted he had been huffing refrigerant from the unit. The next night police responded to a call for trespassing and once again found the man. Five residents have been affected and the police report notes that the man was hospitalized on at least two occasions after huffing refrigerant.

A 36-year-old Minnesota man has been charged with theft after inhaling almost $1,800 worth of refrigerant from the air conditioning systems of five of his neighbors. Last fall, the man was discovered multiple times by his neighbors slumped in their yards between the house and the air conditioning unit. Whenever police arrived, he would not respond and appeared unconscious. The man admitted to police he had inhaled refrigerant and was taken to the hospital. The felony charge of theft carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Earlier this week a 33 year old man was arrested for allegedly “ingesting refrigerant from a dismantled air conditioning unit.” He was charged with criminal mischief.
The owner of the business noticed the man with his mouth on the copper refrigerant line and it appeared he was huffing from the line. When the owner noticed that the A/C unit had been taken apart and the refrigerant line was bent, the man ran off. Deputies found him hiding in a neighbor’s shed.

Theft of refrigerant out of air conditioners continues to stay on a steady rise.
After an entire day of a family's A/C unit was blowing hot air into their residence they called a heating and cooling company to find out what the issue could be.
When a service man arrived he found caps and a plastic bag around the unit. Someone had stolen two pounds worth of refrigerant from the unit to get high.
It cost the family about 150 dollars to correct the situation.
They now have locking service caps on their units.

A surge in teens huffing has prompted Poison Control to add freon to the list of abused inhalants.
Freon is a refrigerant used in air conditioners.
The number of cases of teens pumping the refrigerant out of air conditioners to get high is on the rise.
Officials say it can be deadly after one dose.
According to the Director of the Georgia Poison Control, there has been an increase in inhalant abuse cases from five in 2009 and 2010 to six through May of this year.
The Poison Center stated that there had been no reported deaths in Georgia from huffing refrigerant just yet.

In the last year there have been a handful of deaths in Tulsa connected to huffing.
At least two people have died from huffing refrigerant from air conditioning units.
Just a day before the death of the 19-year-old male, police encountered another huffing incident with a group of burglars in a pursuit who were suspected of huffing gold spray paint.
