Rapid City, SD - Two separate huffing-related arrests occurred this past weekend. The first arrest happened on Friday when officers responded to reports of a man lying in someone's yard smelling a bottle. Police found that the bottle contained paint thinner and he was arrested to ingesting a substance other than alcohol to intoxicate. The second arrest occurred on Sunday when police found a man huffing from a can of air duster and was found to be visibly impaired.

A 31-year-old man faces charges of inhaling harmful chemicals after police found him huffing paint thinner near a drug store. This is the fourth time he's been caught this year, and at least the 18th time since 2005. After he was released from jail police later found him hunched over, huffing. The man even poured paint thinner on his shirt and tried huffing it in front of the police, attempting to look normal. The man has been convicted in every one of his cases but has never served more than 20 days in jail.

Man Huffs Paint Thinner and Assaults 7 Year Old Boy.

A 57 year old man, in an altered state after huffing paint thinner, assaulted a 7 year old neighbor. The man walked across the street to where the boy was playing and pinned him against a telephone pole. A mailman intervened and the man was taken to the hospital and charged with unlawful restraint of a minor, simple assault, and illegal use of certain solvents and noxious substances.

Ohio Man Threatens Cops and Punches Dog In the Face After Huffing

A 52 year old man erupted in a violent spat after huffing
paint thinner. When police arrived at
his home he used a flashlight to smash one of the windows. He then threatened
to shoot the officers so they called in a SWAT team which led to a 4 hour standoff.
He wielded a large kitchen knife, hurled a knife at one
person, chased another with a nail-spiked plank, and punched a pit bull in the
face. He was taken into custody and then tried to kick out the windows of the police
car. He was arrested for felonious
assault, aggravated menacing, cruelty to animals, and criminal damaging.

Kentucky Woman Huffing Paint Thinner Behind the Wheel

Earlier this week a woman was “arrested a woman on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of paint thinner.”
She was arrested at her home upon getting out of the driver’s side of the car while the car was still running. There was a wine bottle with paint thinner in the passenger seat and the police report notes she “appeared intoxicated on an unknown subject, was unsteady on her feet, had slurred speech and glassy eyes.” Later police found out that she had recently been arrested from the hospital for allegedly huffing paint thinner.

According to the National Inhalant Prevention Coalition, this includes adhesives like model airplane glue and rubber cement; aerosols, including spray paint, air freshener, deodorant and computer keyboard cleaners; solvents and gases, like toxic markers, paint thinner and nail polish remover; cleaning agents like spot remover and degreaser; even food products like cooking spray and whipped dessert topping. Most are cheap and easy for kids to buy over the counter.

Inhalant Abuse in Gallatin County, Montana

The commander of the Missouri River Drug Task Force commented on inhalant abuse in the region. “Here in Gallatin County we see huffing or inhaling of butane lighter fluid, paints, paint thinner, and glues.”
He also revealed that about 50% of those inhaling the products to get high are under 18 years of age.”

Man Chased by Neighbors After Crashing Through Neighborhood

Paint thinner caused a 26-year-old driver to crash his car into a fence, knock over a stop sign, drive through several neighborhood yards, crash into an RV, then into a house, and finally into a tree. Neighbors were startled by the loud sounds created by the driver who did not use his brakes.
The driver was incoherent because he had been inhaling paint thinner from a plastic bag while driving. He tried to run away after the crash but neighbors chased him down before police could catch him.

Man Found Unconscious In Apartment

A Pennsylvania was found unconscious in his apartment after he went missing for a week. Police visited the man's house only to be greeted by fumes so dense they could be smelled from the hallway. Upon entering the apartment, police noted there were several open cans of paint thinner which the man had huffed.
This is not the first visit to the man's house. Police have responded to similar calls the residence prior to finding the man "severely intoxicated" at the scene of the most recent incident. As a result, he was charged with the illegal use of solvents.

Possession Extends Probation

A Watertown, New York man accused of breaking into “Watertown Builders Supply, in March 2005 and stealing $650 in tools was resentenced to a year in the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building” after violating his probation in connection with the 2005 robbery of a local hardware store.
He will serve an additional year on top of his prior 5 year conviction due to his illegal possession of a noxious gas and suspected 'huffing' of paint thinner earlier last month.
Many county and state governments across the nation are begginning to impose tougher preemptive measures to eradicate improper use of inhalants.

The article describes a case in which a 14 year-old boy killed a 4 year-old girl. At the time the boy “became the youngest juvenile in Minnesota to be certified as an adult and sent to state prison.”
Now, “exactly 14 years to the day” the girl was killed, he is scheduled to be released.
The article also references the boy’s early use of inhalants:
He “told investigators he began abusing a head-spinning array of drugs and inhalants by age 11. He also "sniffed gasoline, Glade, paint thinner, Whiteout, spray paint, rubber and model cement,'' according to court papers.”

Man Sentenced to Six Months
The Plain Dealer of Cleveland, Ohio featured a story yesterday about a 42-year-old man who was sentenced to 6 months in jail after being caught inhaling paint thinner. The police officers say that the man could not remember his name when questioned and a witness had seen him huffing. He had a previous record for abusing harmful intoxicants.
Similar to the story from yesterday's news, it would be interesting to find out how many times he had been arrested for inhalant abuse in the past.

Number One Brain Cell Killer
4Mind4Life.com just came out with a list of "50 Things That Kill Brain Cells". Not surprisingly, the number one killer of brain cells - sniffing paint. It ranked ahead of other harmful activities such as:
- doing cocaine (2)
- getting a concussion (4), and
- going through chemotherapy (21)
Other inhalants were also mentioned, including:
- cleaning solvents (35)
- paint remover (40), and
- nitrous oxide (48)
Inhalant abuse not only affects the brain but can also lead to other serious medical issues, such as liver and kidney damage, hearing loss, bone marrow damage, and heart problems. Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome can occur the first time anyone tries inhalants, and occurs when the heart beats rapidly and erratically and eventually stops.

Man Abused Inhalants Near Child
Joshua Webb was charged with neglect of a dependent as well as two counts of possession of a controlled substance after a relative called police claiming that Webb was getting high around his son, either one or two years old. According to the story,
The charges are all felonies, with a three to six month jail sentence for each. The child was found asleep and unharmed.
Webb was staggering when he answered the door, barely able to hold his head up to speak to officers. Officers noticed a paint thinner-type smell, both on Webb and in the home. Webb told officers the odor was from paint thinner and admitted huffing it.
The charges are all felonies, with a three to six month jail sentence for each. The child was found asleep and unharmed.
