A 13-year-old boy in Singapore fell from the 10th floor of a building after inhaling butane, found in gas canisters and lighters. They boy was pronounced dead after he was found on the second floor ledge. The teen had been sitting on the 10th floor ledge dangling his feet over when his hand slipped and he fell from his perch. The court ruled the case as a tragic misadventure.

Georgia Officials Warn of Inhalant Abuse Linked Health Risks
Officials in Georgia warn that teens who abuse various
household items. In particular they want to spread awareness of sudden sniffing
death syndrome. As its name suggests, it occurs when people inhale certain
substances that cause rapid damage to the cardiovascular system.
Furthermore, officials describe how many teens and preteens
are attempting to get drunk on alcohol-based hand sanitizer. In response to the
rise of this action, these officials are warning parents and educators that
this action can be quite harmful since it the alcohol in hand sanitizer is not
meant for human consumption.

16 Year Old Boy Dies after Inhaling Butane
On Saturday November 7th, a 16 year old boy in Ashikaga,
Tochigi Prefecture died after inhaling butane. According to local police
reports, he and four friends went to a park and began inhaling the gas.
Allegedly, they did so by first collecting it in plastic bags. Shortly
afterwards he collapsed.
His friends quickly called 119 (the Japanese equivalent of
911). However, this action was not enough. After paramedics arrived, he was
soon taken to a local hospital. Although doctors attempted to treat him, the
boy died around midnight.

Ohio Man Burned After Huffing Related Fire

A 20-year-old Ohio man has burns over 65% of his body after huffing gasoline. When fire fighters arrived to the home they found the man naked in the living room. The man appeared disoriented and
starting back away from the first responders.
The man had been huffing gasoline in the basement of the home where there was a water heater and furnace. There was a flash fire, mostly contained around the mattress the man was sitting on. A water pipe burst put out the fire before crews arrived, possibly saving both the man and the house.
There were two adults and two children also inside the home, but they were safely evacuated. The man is listed in critical condition.

A serious huffing incident occurred in the South Auckland area of New Zealand. Two people were hospitalized with serious burns, and a third also received burns. Police say that seven people were huffing gasoline in a back shed. Neighbors heard a "whoosing" sound and then saw flames coming from the back of the property. The neighbors reported a smell of plastic after the fire started.
Papakura Police state, "We've come to the address and found a premises which bears sort of all the signs potentially a huffing incident that's kind of gone wrong."

Man Huffs Gas While Smoking a Cigarette in Australia

On December 18, 2013 a neighbor told police she heard an explosion, ran outside and found a disheveled man with a completely burned off beard sitting on her patio demanding food. When police arrived the man admitted he had entered the shed with a lit cigarette while sniffing gas when the fire started. He was charged with arson and unlawfully entering the shed. This past week at the preliminary hearing the man's attorney argued for a lesser charge of negligence.

A Chattanooga woman was arrested in connection with a March 29th apartment fire. The Captain says he and other firefighters noticed a strong smell of gasoline after an apartment fire was put out. He called the Fire Investigation Division to investigate. Evidence showed that one of the two occupants had been huffing gasoline in the bathroom.
The person huffing lit up in the bathroom and due to the room full of gas fumes, a fire erupted. The two occupants in the apartment at the time were not injured.
Following the investigation, officials went to arrest the woman occupant. Officials say she and her husband were evicted from the apartment complex and were staying at a local hotel. When officials arrived at the hotel they could smell gas fumes and the woman refused to answer the door. Investigators entered through a window and arrested her. They found two one-gallon containers full of gas inside the room. She faces six counts of reckless endangerment due to the danger she put the other apartment residents in.

New Zealand Man's Death Attributed to Huffing Gas

coroner has ruled that inhalant abuse (“asphyxiation due to inhaling LPG gas”) was
the cause of death for the 42 year old man whose badly decomposed body was
found in in a park in October 2012.
Shortly
after last being seen alive the man broke into and began living in a stored
caravan where he huffed the gas. The
owner found the man along with 9kg gas canisters, one of which was still
attached via tube to the man’s face.

Minnesota Man Caught Huffing Propane - Third Time in a Month

A 37 year old man was arrested for huffing, his third time
in one month.
Police officers were
called to an apartment building for a report of a man huffing propane. They saw the man inhaling propane fumes and
smelled propane “from the hallways and even outside the building.”
He was taken to a medical facility for evaluation and then
booked into the detention facility for abusing a toxic substance.” Fire and
rescue crews also responded to check on the building.

A recent huffing incident in Bull Shoals, Arkansas, killed one and caused the destruction of an entire home.
The young man who allegedly started the accident was huffing gas from a car gas tank using a garden hose and mistakenly got gasoline on his clothes. When he later lit a cigarette in his room, he set himself on fire and consequently the rest of the house.

Two Students May Face Expulsion for Huffing

Two middle school students in South Carolina were suspended after they were found huffing a “gas like substance” in a bathroom at their school. Reports say the substance was similar to the gasoline used in model cars, and the students were using it to get high. Although the Sheriff’s office was called, a district representative did not believe the students had been charged. The students were suspended for ten days, and will face a hearing with school district officials. District policy recommends expulsion in cases of substance abuse.
The school’s drug prevention program does cover huffing, and the director of a local drug awareness program encourages parents to talk to young children about inhalant abuse and to be careful when storing containers that could be used for huffing.

The increase in inhalant-related deaths in Humboldt County has driven the Coroner’s Office to advocate for more inhalant abuse awareness. Last week, in a car crash that killed the 21-year-old driver and his 20-year-old passenger, “at least 18 [empty] nitrous oxide canisters and a personalized whipped-cream dispenser -- often used to inhale the gas -- were found at the scene of [the] truck accident.”

Man Does Not Learn Lesson, Caught Inhaling Solvent Again

In an update to the Oct. 11 post, “Man Inhales Solvent, Home Catches Fire,” police were again called to the same house for strange odor. The same man was found inhaling a flammable solvent commonly used as starter fluid for gasoline and diesel engines in a closed room. He was not charged for the previous incident but this time was taken into custody and brought to a hospital "for medical and psychological evaluation.” He was charged with two counts of disorderly persons and one count of creating risk of widespread injury.

A man’s home caught fire after he inhaled a volatile solvent from aerosol cans. He was rescued by a police officer who also carried his pets to safety. “The levels of the solvent — identified by police as heptane ether, a flammable solvent commonly used as starter fluid for gasoline and diesel engines — were so high the house was condemned by the building department.”
The danger was discovered when the homeowner’s wife had arrived home called police to report a strange odor in the house then waited outside for the police to arrive. The officer had to be hospitalized for his injuries and placed off-duty. The homeowner was also hospitalized and charged with disorderly conduct and being under the influence of an inhalant.
