Ohio Man Burned After Huffing Related Fire

Via Fox19.com

A 20-year-old Ohio man has burns over 65% of his body after huffing gasoline.  When fire fighters arrived to the home they found the man naked in the living room.  The man appeared disoriented and
starting back away from the first responders.

The man had been huffing gasoline in the basement of the home where there was a water heater and furnace.  There was a flash fire, mostly contained around the mattress the man was sitting on.  A water pipe burst put out the fire before crews arrived, possibly saving both the man and the house.

There were two adults and two children also inside the home, but they were safely evacuated.  The man is listed in critical condition.

Man Addicted To Huffing Gasoline Sets Nephew On Fire

Via The Daily Times in New Mexico

A 21-year-old man alleges that his uncle set him on fire in 2009, leaving him nearly deaf in one ear. He “sustained burns on 30 percent of his body, including his arms, neck and head.” The nephew claims that once he told his uncle to move out of their apartment because of his habit of huffing gasoline, his uncle threw gasoline on him “and it started burning.” The nephew was rushed to the hospital for treatment; skin graphs were not necessary.

Thirty minutes before the uncle doused his nephew that day, he threw gasoline on his girlfriend while the two were refilling a sports drink bottle with gasoline at a gas station. The girlfriend claims he threatened to set her on fire after she told him she was leaving him. The uncle is charged with attempted murder in the second degree, third-degree felony assault with intent to commit a violent felony, third-degree felony aggravated battery against a household member, fourth-degree felony false imprisonment and third-degree felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Indiana Woman Suffers Second Degree Burns From Huffing

Via SouthBendTribune.com in Indiana:

A 20 year old woman was taken via helicopter to a burn unit after an inhalant related incident earlier this week.

The woman was in her car outside a Walgreens when “customers heard a "loud pop,'' then saw clothes inside the woman's car on fire.” She ran from the car and police found her with second-degree burns on her head, neck, arms and hands.

The woman told firefighters she had been “huffing” cans of aerosol deodorant but then told police she was merely emptying the cans to get rid of the contents after her stint in a rehabilitation facility.

Police note she has a history of huffing and they allege she lit a cigarette while inhaling the products. The report also points out that all the car windows were up and nearly a dozen aerosol cans were found in the car.”

Police Suspect 'Huffing' in Explosion

From PennLive.com in Pennsylvania

Last week an 18-year-old man was seriously injured after his vehicle exploded in the parking lot of a retail store early Monday morning. Police are investigating as to whether or not the young man was ‘huffing’ prior to the explosion. In his statement to police, the teen claimed “he had filled the car with gasoline and pulled into a nearby parking lot to light a cigarette when his car caught fire.”

Despite invoking a powerful explosion that “blew out the car’s windshield and bent out the frames to the four side windows” no damage was done to the store, the parking lot, or any other surrounding vehicles. The teen is currently being treated at an area burn center where doctors are assessing his injuries.

Police have impounded the teen’s car to further examine the cause of explosion, and are working alongside local firefighters to collect any evidence that may attribute the incident to ‘huffing.’

Fire 'Down Under'

From BBC World News

An Australian man found himself engulfed in flames earlier this month after aggressively storming police officers “with a container of petrol fuel and a cigarette lighter.” Aiming to prevent any sort of arson related attack; officers fired Taser stun guns in defense “penetrating the suspect's skin with over 50,000 volts of electricity from two copper wires attached to the gun.”

Witnesses divulged to police that the suspect was indeed sniffing petroleum at the time of the incident, allowing investigators to determine that remaining deposits of fuel located on the suspect’s face triggered the fire that left him with 3rd degree burns to over ten percent of his body.

The suspect is currently being hospitalized in Western Australia and remains in critical condition despite his close encounter with death. He is being charged with “assault to prevent arrest and possession of [an intoxicating] sniffing substance.”

2 Men Huff Again -Even After Second-Degree Burns

From Anderson Independent Mail in South Carolina:

Two homeless men (ages 19 and 35) were arrested after allegedly using inhalants. The police report notes “when police confronted the “dazed and confused” men Tuesday night, each was found with a straw between their mouths and a can of computer duster.”

One of the officers stated, “When I opened the driver's door, the driver took the can away from his mouth and began laughing.” Both men are being charged with “two counts of using aromatic hydrocarbons and one count of possessing an open container.”

“The men told the judge that they were living in a 2002 Subaru, which police said contained open bottles of liquor and multiple cans of compressed air.”

This is not the first time the two men have been involved with inhalant abuse. Three months ago, the men were hospitalized after suffering second-degree burns “in a flash fire caused by huffing computer cleaner in an unventilated car.” The men had been huffing from approximately 5 cans of dusters when one tried to light a cigarette.

12 Year Old Boy Severely Burned After Huffing

From the Sunday Star Times (New Zealand) earlier this week.:

A 12 year old boy “huffed flyspray through his jacket” and then set himself on fire using a lighter. He suffered severe burns and remains in the hospital.

The article notes: “They could see "ice cubes" of residue on his clothes from the spray. "He was high and he was just being stupid," says the 12-year-old who passed him the lighter. "I told him not to do anything stupid... Then he lit the shirt... It just started out as a little patch." The fire quickly spread and the group started yelling at the boy to "stop, drop and roll". But he panicked, running away from them.

The shirt “burned for about 45 seconds” before his 14 year old friend caught him and ripped the shirt from him. The article quotes the 14 year old as saying, "I carried him on my shoulders to the fountain. He had bubbles all on his chest. His whole chest was burned. He was like, `take me home, take me home'."

Instead, the 14 year old carried the 12 year old from the foundation to the “Aquatic Centre next door, put him in a cold shower, and rang for an ambulance.”
