Wisconsin Woman Jailed After Repeated Inhalant Abuse

For her repeated incidents of inhalant abuse, a 47 year old
woman is scheduled to spend two years in jail and three years on extended
supervision upon release from prison. As part of the supervision she is
required “not to drink alcohol, enter taverns, or possess aerosol cans.”
The woman was sentenced this week after her probation was
revoked due to “huffing keyboard cleaner on four
subsequent occasions, grabbing and jerking the steering wheel of a taxi in
which she was a passenger, and kicking the rear view and side mirrors of the
cab.”
The article notes her 2009 crashes where in one incident
when passers-by gave her a shirt for her head wound she “sprayed
dust cleaner on the shirt and huffed the garment.”

Two Florida Men Charged with Huffing and Child Neglect

Last Friday, two Florida men were found huffing cans of aerosol with two young kids in the car. One of the inhalant users told police that he was watching the children, and that the young boy was his son.
After further investigation, it appeared that the two users had past arrests and minor offenses. One of the men was held on $1,500 bond for his two charges, while the other remained in jail with a bond set at $500 and $1,000 on child neglect. The second man was also being held without bond for violation of probation charges for burglary of conveyance and petit theft.

Illinois Man Charged with Reckless Homicide After Killing Three

Earlier this morning, Judge Ted Hamer of Henry County Court District in Illinois charged a twenty-year-old man with reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence. The driver is connected with three previous deaths which took place in November of 2012 during a car accident.
While it was first unclear whether the driver was having seizures or huffing, it soon became clear to authorities that he was abusing inhalants. A toxicologist confirmed the man was huffing using various pieces of evidence such as the weight loss in the can discovered at the scene, and the driver's history of "blacking out."
The driver could face anywhere from six to twenty-eight years in prison, with a possible but very slim chance of probation.

Huffing, Shoplifting, and Car Theft in Georgia

A 26-year-old man in Georgia faces charges of car theft, shoplifting, probation violation, and improper use of a substance.
Police were called to investigate a shoplifting report when they found the man inhaling from a computer duster can in his car. Police later found 25 empty cans in the young man's car.
Because the man was highly intoxicated, police took him to the hospital. Police left the man at the emergency room, and they planned on charging him with shoplifting after he received medical attention. The man fled the hospital and found an unlocked car with the keys inside. He drove away from the hospital, but crashed into the woods.
The man then attempted to escape on foot, but the police department's K-9 unit caught up with him. Police learned that the man had been on probation in another county and now faces additional charges.

Caught Huffing While Awaiting Sentencing for Inhalant Abuse

A 29 year-old man was arrested earlier this month after a probation officer caught him huffing computer duster spray behind a dumpster at the day reporting center. The officer noticed he appeared under the influence and had “an aerosol canister in his left jacket pocket.”
The man has been ordered to report to the center while awaiting sentencing on an inhalant related hit and run crash in October, his “third offense of being under the influence of a solvent.”

Driver Sentenced to Six Months in Jail After Deadly Huffing Crash

A 22-year-old woman accused of contributing to the death of her teenage passenger, was sentenced to six months in prison and three years probation.
The woman huffed inhalants while traveling with the 16-year-old. Both failed to wear seat belts. Her car veered and struck a guardrail during a late night rainstorm.
Police who responded to the scene found cans in the back seat of the woman's car.
After the accident the woman tested positive for difluoroethane, a chemical found in dust remover.
The victims family and their prosecutor are scheduling a time to meet with state legislatures for a zero tolerance rule against driving under the influnce of inhalants.

Mother Jailed For 'Huffing' in front of Son

The mother who was caught huffing computer duster while driving as her 6-year-old son looked on from the back seat, will spend 30 days in jail on a DUI charge. On August 18th a passing motorist noticed the suspect driving erratically and even witnessed her take several ‘hits’ from an aerosol can. The motorist began following the vehicle and discovered “a little boy sitting in the back seat with his nose pressed against the back seat window looking scared to death.”
The suspect eventually pulled over only to continue huffing in front of her son and the tailing driver. According to incident reports, the driver was able to secure the 6-year-old from his mother’s car just before she fled the scene.
Police charged the mother with DUI and 'the implied consent and neglect of a child.' However after reaching a plea bargain with the prosecution, the neglect charges were dropped. This is not the suspect’s first criminal offense. In fact, she was on probation for a felony drug charge at the time of the incident.

Jankins Heads to Prison For Fatal Crash

Rachael Jankins, 20, was sentenced to four-and-a-half to 10 years in prison for her involvement in the August 14th crash outside Delaware County Memorial Hospital that killed 19-year-old Nicole Gallo and seriously injured 20-year-old Christine Bochanski. Jankins initially told police she was distracted by her iPod when she lost control of her vehicle and struck both women. However, police have ruled that Jankins was ‘huffing’ computer duster prior to the accident, as her blood tested positive for difluoroethane- a chemical concentrated in keyboard cleaning spray.
Jankins pled guilty to charges of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, and aggravated assault yesterday. In addition to her prison sentence, Jankins will serve 6 years probation and be expected to pay over $18,000 in restitution.

A 20-year-old male was ticketed for “suspicion of inhaling chemical agents” last week in suburban Detroit when officers found the suspect “slouched over on a bench” and visibly inebriated outside of a local furniture store. The suspect was reportedly on probation at the time of the incident.
Upon further questioning, officers spotted a can of dust remover that was half empty inside the suspect’s unzipped black jacket. “The suspect was also carrying an inhaler in his jacket, which he later told police he used to control his asthma.” The 20-year-old was ticketed for violating the terms of his probation and is expected to appear in district court next week.

A 32-year-old Wisconsin man was found guilty on two misdemeanor counts of “possessing a hazardous substance with intent to abuse, and intentionally inhaling a hazardous substance” last week, and has been ordered to receive regular drug counseling, undergo a psychological examination, and pay $280 in fines. He has also been sentenced to two years of probation.
According to police records, the suspect was seen inhaling computer duster while loitering in a restaurant parking lot earlier this year- only to be caught weeks later ‘huffing’ duster and “urinating in a yard.”

Possession Extends Probation

A Watertown, New York man accused of breaking into “Watertown Builders Supply, in March 2005 and stealing $650 in tools was resentenced to a year in the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building” after violating his probation in connection with the 2005 robbery of a local hardware store.
He will serve an additional year on top of his prior 5 year conviction due to his illegal possession of a noxious gas and suspected 'huffing' of paint thinner earlier last month.
Many county and state governments across the nation are begginning to impose tougher preemptive measures to eradicate improper use of inhalants.
