Ottawa County Sheriff’s Deputies Report Increased Inhalant Abuse

On October 6^th 2015, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Deputies reported that they have investigated three separate instances of residents abusing inhalants while driving. The first two instances resulted in the drivers hitting trees. However, the third incident resulted in the driver crashing into a utility pole on Sunday October 4^th.

  The crashes occurred in Jamestown Township, Georgetown Township, and Coopersville respectively. The latest suspect suffered serious injuries, had his car totaled, and has been charged with driving while intoxicated.

Major Damage in Alabama After Huffing Behind the Wheel

A 20 year old man lost control of his vehicle after huffing behind the wheel. His car left the road and then damaged several headstones as it careened through a cemetery and passed through another road. It then continued through a couple of fences, crossed another street and crashed into the side of a local church. Police noted the damage caused was "substantial."

The driver was arrested for “Driving Under the Influence of Any Substance Which Impairs the Mental or Physical Faculties” and it carries a $500 bond.

Paint 'Huffer' Attacks Officer

Earlier this month a 46-year-old Las Cruces man was arrested and jailed for his unmitigated attack on a local police officer. Police were responding to a report of vandalism when they found a 46-year-old man inhaling paint at a busy intersection. One officer “reported smelling paint on the man’s breath and even discovered a can of paint in one of his pockets.” The paint ‘huffer’ was placed into custody and brought to the Las Cruces County Jail on charges of criminal property damage and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following his arrival to jail the suspect grew agitated and refused to follow simple police orders; aggressively lunging at one officer who was trying to get him to sit on a bench. The suspect reportedly “became and angry and lost control; knocking the officer over and pinning him into a corner where he repeatedly kneed the officer four or five times in the legs and attempted to bite him.” According to incident reports, the officer fought back and was eventually able to restrain the suspect. No serious injuries were reported. The 46-year-old later blamed his outburst on ‘huffing’ and was charged with felony battery on a police officer.
