Mississippi Teens Die From Huffing

A 14-year-old Mississippi boy died after huffing computer duster spray. The boy was taken to a local hospital were he was pronounced dead. Authorities are waiting on lab results to conclude the death investigation.

Texas Woman Accused of Huffing, Wrecking Car, and Killing Two

A 21-year old woman from Texas was charged last week with two counts of manslaughter in the deaths of a 38-year old woman and her 2 year old daughter. The woman is suspected of huffing compressed air while driving, blacking out, and causing a head-on collision on December 16, 2012.
The woman crossed the 15-foot median and collided with a minivan that held a woman and her two daughters (one daughter survived the accident). Both vehicles landed on their sides and had extensive damage.
"The woman told investigators at the scene that she had just come the Wal-Mart less than two miles away and blacked out while driving, according to the affidavit that accompanied her arrest warrant." Investigators found that she had purchased industrial strength compressed air from the Wal-Mart. "According to the affidavit, the compressed air contains a chemical called difluoroethane R-152a that can give a 'quick high' when inhaled. Side effects include nausea, headache, confusion and loss of consciousness, according to the affidavit."
Manslaughter is a second-degree felony. If convicted, the woman could face two to 20 years in prison.

Florida Man with History of Huffing Dies at Age 29

After spending 18 months in and out of recovery programs for inhalant abuse, a young man was found dead in his car this past Saturday in Florida. Officials found the man surrounded by a heap of aerosol cans, suggesting his death was caused by huffing. The man's past history of arrest three times in one week for inhalant abuse also aided in police investigations.

Trio Charged With Manslaughter in the Death of a 15-Year-Old
Three teens have been charged with manslaughter in the death of a 15-year-old girl last New Years.
The teens had purchased a dust remover at a local Wal-mart with the intent of getting high.
They soaked a cloth and held it to the victims mouth until she went unconsious.
The victim died on the way to the hospital.
The trios charges include contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

AC Units Installed With Extra Security Due to Refrigerant Abuse

As refrigerant addiction increases among children, S. A. F. E. Chesterfield, a substance abuse prevention group in Chesterfield VA, is working to stop the trend.
Mona Casey, a Florida mom, lost her 15-year-old son Charles to a refrigerant addiction. What started as an after school habit with a friend cost him his life. Casey created http://www.uproarorg.org/ to educate people on the day to day dangers of substance abuse. Starting this year, AC units are being installed with an added security feature.
Dominion Service Company of Richmond and many other air conditioning technicians now install a small cap that fits around the valve where refrigerant can be released. The cap can only be removed by a key that is unavailable to the public.
"I'm very, very happy that the people there in Virginia are taking this very seriously," said Casey.
To date 400 caps have been installed in the Richmond area.

13 Year Old Boy Dies from Huffing the Day Before His Birthday
Courtesy of the Gladstone Observer Gladstone, Queensland Thursday night at 11 PM police were alerted about a young boy that was unconscious in the parking lot of a nearby store. When police arrived the young man was still unconscious. Police administered CPR until the ambulance arrived. At one point during the resuscitation attempt, the boy briefly regained consciousness. He was believed to have been inhaling an aerosol prior to his death. His 14th birthday would have been Friday.
