Wyoming Psychiatrist Convicted for Huffing and Driving

Cody, WY - A local psychiatrist, Matthew Hopkins, has been convicted for driving into a car head-on while under the influence of inhalants and injuring the woman in the other vehicle. A jury convicted him of a felony count of aggravated assault and battery and misdemeanor counts of driving while under the influence of a substance and unlawful use of a toxic substance. Hopkins was sentenced to 18 to 36 months in prison for his offenses. The incident occurred after Hopkins inhaled from a can of dust cleaner and tried driving to his office only to pass out at the wheel and drift into the other lane hitting the other car.

Close friends of Hopkins asked for no prison time and instead mandatory rehabilitation but the Deputy Attorney asked for six to eight years since this is not Hopkins first relapse with substance abuse. In 2003, his medical license was suspended in New Hampshire after he was found writing himself prescriptions. From November 2011 to April 2012, his license was suspended in Wyoming for noncompliance with his monitoring program. All of Hopkins license restrictions were removed in 2015 but he began to relapse publicly in later 2016 after the death of his father. In November of 2016, Hopkins was arrested after he clipped a car in a parking lot and drove off. Police believed him to be under the influence but lacked evidence to prove it so he was awaiting trial. In June 2017, he fell off his bike and police officers found his blood alcohol to be more than twice the legal limit.

Due to his long history of substance abuse the judge and jury felt that more than rehabilitation was required for Hopkins. They said that he was very smart and new the dangers of huffing but made the choice to drive regardless. Hopkins relinquished his medical license and will most likely never practice again.

Watertown, SC - A 24-year-woman was found by police passed out at the wheel from inhaling dust cleaner. Police responded to reports of a car driving in the wrong direction and found the woman with her child in the back seat of the car. She was charged with ingesting an intoxicant and child abuse since her child was 4-years-old.

Myrtle Beach, SC- A 60-year-old man was arrested for huffing dust cleaner after police responded to reports of a disorderly person. The police found eight cans of dust cleaner in his car.

Illinois woman arrested for huffing and shoplifting

According to police reports, an Illinois woman was arrested for shoplifting and unlawful use of intoxicating compounds at a store on the evening of July 16^th. The woman confessed to taking a can of dust cleaner and huffing it in the bathroom of the store to get high. The woman also admitted to removing pills from boxes of cough medicine.

Teen Dies After Night of Drug Binge

A 15-year-old boy died after a night of inhaling dust cleaner, smoking marijuana, drinking bourbon, and ingesting prescription medication. He and a 14-year-old friend had partied that night beginning at 5:30 PM. The 14-year-old went inside his house after 10PM, assuming his friend would walk to his own house a few blocks away. The friend awoke the next morning to find the 15-year-old still in his backyard, not breathing and unresponsive. The exact cause of death has not yet been determined, however, any one of the illegal substances could have caused the death.

Woman Huffing Dust Cleaner Crashes Into Tree

A woman was charged with resisting law enforcement, driving while intoxicated, criminal reckless and hit and run after a report of her damaging parked cars in a Walgreens parking lot.

Officers found the 30-year-old woman blocks away. When officers caught up with her they reported her as "delirious". While attempting to take her keys from her posession the woman attempted to drive off with officers still attached to the vehicle.

The woman crashed into a tree a few blocks away. No police officers were hurt.

She was huffing dust cleaner.

Unconscious Person Reported in Home Depot

Police received a report about an unconscious person in a Home Depot.

The unconscious person was a 41-year-old woman who had been huffing dust cleaner in the store. She was reportedly found collapsed in the floral section.

When a man awoke her, she began huffing more dust cleaner. The man then tried to take the can from her possession, prompting her to get up off the ground knocking over two flower pots in the process.

The woman then fled the store.

When police arrived she was found walking through a wooded embankment where she confessed to huffing cans but was unable to show proof of purchase for each can in her possession.

The night of her death she was found alone with two empty cans.

Her parents were in the process of getting her help after discovering her addiction.

Woman Violates Parole After Causing Car Crash

A crash investigation revealed a 42-year-old woman had been inhaling dust cleaner.

The woman crashed on private property and then fled the scene.

The police suspected the woman had been the suspect in the crash. When police arrived at her home, she was found huffing dust cleaner.

The woman has been on parole prior to the arrest.
