California Survey Results for Inhalant Use by Lafayette 7th Graders

The California Healthy Kids Survey results for Lafayette’s seventh graders was just released. The survey notes:

• 5% of the students have used inhalants
• 2% of the students have used inhalants within the past 30 days
• Statewide, 5% of the students have reported using inhalants within the past 30 days

Inhalant Data: San Ramon Unified School District in CA

The results of the 2010 California Healthy Kids Survey were recently released. Inhalant data for San Ramon Unified School District follows below:

• 5th graders: 3% had tried inhalants
• 7th graders: 7% had tried inhalants at least once, 3% had used inhalants in the last 30 days

One California School Alarmed by Inhalant Data from their 5th Graders

The results of the California Healthy Kids Survey were recently released by the La Cañada Unified School District. The results reveal frightening new data on inhalant use by county youth.

The survey showed that 11% of Palm Crest Elementary's fifth graders had used inhalants to get high. School board members were surprised and concerned. One remarked "The use of inhalants is surprising. It's one of the big things we need to look out for."

The article also points out “11% is nearly triple the 4% average of fifth graders state-wide who've used inhalants.”

Additionally, it is “also significantly higher than the 3% and 1% averages at Paradise Canyon and La Cañada Elementary Schools, respectively.”

Survey Reveals Reduced Drugs and Alcohol Abuse, but Increased Inhalant Abuse

Last week, a survey from Erie, PA revealed that Erie County's adolescents are using less drugs and alcohol, but unfortunately inhalant abuse is an exception. Inhalants have been used by 7.2 percent of students in the past 30 days, which is more than double the 3.5 percent reported in 2007.

Amy Eisert, director of the Mercyhurst College Civic Institute, commented that this is because "inhalants are easily found and abused," especially when "availability is everything when it comes to juvenile drug use." However, Eisert remains hopeful, noting that they have implemented prevention programs in various middle schools, which she hopes is working to help the youths make better decisions about substance abuse.

The California Healthy Kids Survey (grades 5, 7, 9 and 11) revealed inhalant abuse data from the Hesperia Unified School District:

• 9% of 7th graders have used inhalants to get high
• 8% of 9th graders have used inhalants to get high
• 7% of 11th graders have used inhalants to get high

Inhalant Abuse: 5th Graders in California

Nearly 1,000 students from Hemet School District took part in the California Healthy Kids Survey. The survey results which were recently released show that 6% of the 5th graders admitted they had tried an inhalant such as glue.

Middle school and High School Students in Ripon County, California are annually adminstered the California Healthy Kids Survey; a self-report assessment targeting risky health behaviors. The state-wide survey specifically addresses issues related to drug and substance use, violence, crime, as well as physical and mental health. The Ripon Unified School District has released the following inhalant use statistics: among 7th graders 5% of the student population admitted to using inhalants in their lifetime, as did 5% of all 9th graders surveyed. Interestingly, 13% of all 11th graders surveyed reported past inhalant use, with 72% using alcohol, and 39% using marijuana.
