Details of Teen’s Death From Inhaling Butane
An inquest into the death of a 17-year-old man last December has revealed details from his last minutes alive. On the way to a friend’s house, the victim and the friend stopped to buy two cans of butane. The friend states that the victim was “huffing” the butane almost the whole time while in the car and got “pretty high.” The victim laughed and continued inhaling the butane even while his friend told him he should stop. The victim suddenly told the friend to stop driving the car and passed out shortly after. According to the friend, “his legs tensed and his head started rolling around before flopping to the side. His breathing slowed down to one breath every 15 seconds, and his skin became very pale.” The friend checked for a pulse when he stopped breathing and could not find one. He then drove to the victim’s father’s house where CPR was administered and an ambulance was called.
The friend remembers that the cans the pair had been inhaling from had warning signs on them, but he had not read them.

Death Strikes Twice in 24 Hours
A Saturday death marked the first of two inhalant-related incidents in New Zealand within less than 24 hours. The victim's mother did not know her daughter was using inhalants in the time leading up to her death but there was one warning sign. Approximately two weeks earlier, she found nine empty cans of flyspray in her daughter's room. When she was confronted, the victim claimed the insecticide was meant to ward off flies.
Her daughter's death has emboldened the mother to speak out about inhalant abuse. Local authorities said the death is part of a larger trend with children as "young as 10" abusing the household items. One doctor pointed the only solution: "Continued education and other preventive measures are essential to help curb an extremely dangerous practice."

12 Year Old Boy Severely Burned After Huffing
A 12 year old boy “huffed flyspray through his jacket” and then set himself on fire using a lighter. He suffered severe burns and remains in the hospital.
The article notes: “They could see "ice cubes" of residue on his clothes from the spray. "He was high and he was just being stupid," says the 12-year-old who passed him the lighter. "I told him not to do anything stupid... Then he lit the shirt... It just started out as a little patch." The fire quickly spread and the group started yelling at the boy to "stop, drop and roll". But he panicked, running away from them.
The shirt “burned for about 45 seconds” before his 14 year old friend caught him and ripped the shirt from him. The article quotes the 14 year old as saying, "I carried him on my shoulders to the fountain. He had bubbles all on his chest. His whole chest was burned. He was like, `take me home, take me home'."
Instead, the 14 year old carried the 12 year old from the foundation to the “Aquatic Centre next door, put him in a cold shower, and rang for an ambulance.”

Teen Found Not Guilty
19-year-old Tristian Beckett was declared not guilty of manslaughter after his friend Thomas Hillman died in an explosion. The two friends along with several others were huffing LPG (liquid petroleum gas) in a car when Beckett lit a lighter, setting the gas fumes on fire.Thomas was in the backseat and died of respiratory problems.
As part of his testimony, Tristian claimed that,
it never occurred to him the gas might be a danger when he flicked the lighter as the group had not huffed the gas for 10 minutes and he could not smell gas.
Fire safety officer Paul Wigzell said it only took a 2% to 3 % ratio of LPG to air for the gas to combust.

19-Year-Old Charged With Death of Friend
The two teenagers along with three friends were in a two-door car inhaling LPG, or liquid petroleum gas. They were passing around the canister when Tristian flicked a lighter, causing an explosion.
Glenn Marshall, the prosecuter, was quoted in One News describing the incident:
"Blue flame rolled around the ceiling of the vehicle. All the occupants panicked and you can imagine that there was pandemonium in the vehicle at the time with people screaming trying to get out of the car."
Crystal River, the owner of the car, said that they had been joking about the risks of dying and what they would do if one of them got into trouble,
She cried when she talked about the explosion and getting out of the car. Thomas Hillman had been sitting behind her. She said,"I didn't pop the seat," and that she saw Tristian pulling Thomas out of the car. After that, she witnessed Tristian returning to the car for the LPG bottle, turning it off, and taking it down the street."Then we were talking about lighting (cigarette) lighters and Thomas had his huff and Tristian flicked the lighter."
Alixandria Hilliard, another passenger, thought she remembered Thomas "partly walking beside the accused and being partly dragged to safety," while making grunting noises.
The court is trying to prove whether or not flicking the lighter went beyond carelessness into gross negligence.
