Daughter uses social media to promote huffing awareness

Tucson, AZ: The daughter of a 50-year-old Tucson man took to social media to spread awareness on huffing after her father’s passing. Her video post tells the story of her father’s inhalant abuse and discusses the dangers of these habits going unnoticed.

5 Arizona Elementary Students Sick after Huffing

Five elementary school students were caught huffing aerosol cleaner after one fell sick. Police responded to the incident at Horizon School at noon. One student who had fainted was expected to be ok, but was taken to the hospital along with another student for precautionary reasons. The students are expected to recover, although there was no report on disciplinary action by the school.

Arizona Man Passes Out and Crashes While Driving and Huffing

A 25-year-old Arizona man was charged with DUI- drugs and speed greater than reasonable and prudent.  He also received a citation for failure to control his vehicle.   The man was huffing from a computer duster spray while driving, when he passed out.  The car then crossed three lanes of traffic before hitting a water line at a local store and car-wash.  The car then hit a computer terminal at the car-wash where it spun to hit a second terminal.   The man admitted to huffing from the duster can that was found in his car.

Arizona Woman Arrested for Huffing Related Crash

An 18-year-old Arizona woman who crashed her car into a home had been huffing prior to the crash, police say.   The car went off the road and struck the living room of a house.  No one was inside at the time.  The woman sustained minor facial injuries and a passenger was unharmed. The woman told officers, "she had no idea what happened."  However, if appeared that she was under the influence of something.  Police have established that the woman had been inhalant computer duster less than a half-hour before the crash.  She was arrested for aggravated DUI, felony endangerment, and aggravate criminal damage.

New Inhalant Data From Arizona

The Arizona Criminal Justice Commission recently released Initial 2012 numbers for Navajo County youth substance abuse.

The survey is a "bi-annual opt-in survey that was taken in May 2012 by 1,363 county students, 57% in eighth grade, 23% in 10th grade, 20% in 12th grade."

A few inhalant related notes from the study follow below:
  • Navajo County is behind Arizona use in most areas except cigarette use (4.9 percent higher than state), chewing tobacco (double the state rate), inhalants (0.3 percent higher), steroids (0.2 percent higher and over the counter drugs (0.5 percent).
  • Eighth grade: "Inhalant use was up by 2.6% at 12.4%, still lower than previous surveys between 2004 and 2006."
  • Tenth grade: 4.3% decline in inhalant use
  • Twelfth grade: "Cocaine and inhalants were down more than 3% each."

After Huffing, Man Attacks Cars with Machete in Arizona

On November 1st, an Arizona man who had been abusing inhalants attacked multiple cars with a machete in east Flagstaff. The 22 year old man had been previously arrested for hitting two people with bullet fragments after firing a gun into the ground, last year. His fifth arrest, the individual appeared to be "crazy," and harassed surrounding officers. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident.

Police: Woman was huffing before crashing into home in Arizona

On Wednesday, June 20, a 24-year-old woman crashed into a family's home in Jonesboro, Arizona. The crash was triggered by the woman inhaling computer dusting spray prior to the accident. She is said to have blacked out before the crash.

The woman was issued a citation for DWI-drugs, careless/prohibited driving, and no seat belt. She is expected in court June 25 and was released due to her injuries.

Students Huffing on School Bus in Arizona

Earlier this month a school bus surveillance tape caught two high school students huffing computer dusting spray. One student was arrested on “suspicion of having a vapor-releasing substance containing a toxic substance” and the report notes at least two other high school students were involved.

Woman Resists Arrest after Huffing

Via the Tucson Citizen in Arizona:

A 24-year-old Arizona woman was arrested after she passed out in her car after huffing.

Police found the woman with her car still running and an aerosol can in her lap. An officer turned off the car and had some difficulty waking the young woman. When she finally came to, the young woman tried to inhale from the aerosol can, but the officer confiscated it. Police also found a pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine in the woman’s purse.

According to a passenger who was in the car, the young woman had been huffing for several miles despite being asked to stop. She finally blew out her tire after running into a curb.

Police arrested the woman and placed her in the back of a patrol car. According to the police report, the young woman “became enraged and tried to kick out the rear passenger door window.” The woman remained uncooperative when she arrived at the jail and was placed in an isolation cell.

The woman’s charges include driving with a suspended license, toxic vapors, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Arizona Youth Survey 2010: Inhalant Fact Sheet

The Arizona Criminal Justice Commission’s recently released the results of the Arizona Youth Survey 2010 which surveyed 63,784 students in 8th, 10th, and 12th graders in all 15 state counties.

The accompanying “Inhalant Fact Sheet" includes a number of noteworthy data points:


  • For 30-day use, inhalants were the 6th most prevalent drug used by Arizona junior high & high school students

  • In 2010, 12.3% of youth reported having used inhalants in their lifetime

  • Lifetime inhalant use among youth in Arizona peaked in 2006

  • Youth in 10 of Arizona’s 15 counties reported higher lifetime usage rates compared to the state average

  • 30-day inhalant use among Arizona youth peaked in 2006 followed by slight decreases in 2008 and 2010

  • In 2010, youth in six Arizona counties reported higher 30-day inhalant usage rates compared to the state rate

  • Greenlee,Mohave, and Cochise counties reported the highest rates of 30-day inhalant use; all three counties’ youth 30-day usage rates were more than 1.5 times higher than the state rate

  • Navajo, Graham, La Paz, Santa Cruz and Yavapai counties reported the lowest 30-day inhalant usage rates

  • Usage rates for inhalants decrease with grade level, indicating that 8th graders
    used inhalants at a higher rate compared to their 10th and 12th grade
    counterparts, 1.9 times and 3.7 times higher statewide, respectively

  • Between 2008 and 2010, inhalant usage rates increased for the 8th grade population

  • inhalant use among males has consistently decreased from 2006 to 2010 while the percentage of females that used inhalants peaked in 2008 and remained the same in 2010

  • The data also show that females used inhalants at a rate 1.6 times higher than males in 2010

  • Inhalant use among Native American youth has consistently increased since 2004

  • Native American adolescents reported the highest usage rates compared to any other racial group

  • Asian and Black youth also reported increased usage rates between 2008 and 2010, 61.1% & 28% higher in 2008 than 2010, respectively

  • In 2010, Hispanic youth reported higher inhalant use compared to Non-Hispanic youth.

  • In Arizona according to this data, inhalant use is most prevalent among younger females, Native Americans and Hispanic youth.

Man Arrested for Huffing Gold Paint in Arizona

A 34 year old homeless man was arrested last week after Flagstaff police found him huffing gold paint from a plastic bag.

The article notes “his face was covered in paint and he had a plastic bag and a can of Krylon "Brilliant Gold" spray paint.” He was booked on charges of “inhaling a vapor-releasing substance” which is a felony.

The man indicated that he likes huffing gold paint “because there is just something about it. It is just better than the other colors for some reason."

Girl Suspected to Have Died from Huffing Whip-Its at Rave Days Before Graduation

An 18-year-old girl died at a rave party just days before graduation.

The 18-year-old was a standout student known for her involvement and academic achievement in her school.

Saturday, the girl left with friends for a rave where she collapsed and was still breathing when paramedics arrived. She later died at the hospital for what police suspect, of a death by inhaling nitrous oxide.

The girl's sister accepted her diploma in her place at the graduation ceremony.

Three Springerville Men Arrested

Three men ages 17, 22, and 28, were arrested in Springerville.

The three were in a Springerville hotel when a strange odor was emanating from their room. When police arrived to investigate they found the 28 year old man who appeared to be intoxicated.

Police entered the room and found drug paraphernalia, controlled substances, and gold spray paint, which he admitted to huffing with friends, three hours before police arrived.

When police asked him where his friends had gone, he reported that they were in the bathroom. When backup arrived the police entered the bathroom and found the 17 and the 22 year old.

The 22 and 28 year old was arrested and charged with: possession of drug paraphernalia, possession and sale of a controlled substance, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and aggravated criminal damage.

The 17 year old was referred to a juvenile court before being turned over to his mother.

Huffing Leads to Arrests

Payson police officials say that they have seen a resurgence in huffing and substance abuse in the last four months.

Police watched from a patrol vehicle while a teen stumbles out of a park bathroom with a can of dust remover held to his nose. The watched the teen take two deep breaths from the can. When they entered the bathroom, they witnessed a group of teens getting high off of the cans of dust remover.

On Jan 21, three teens (14,16, 17) were arrested after being caught huffing behind a Wal-Mart. Both the 16 and 17 year old users reported that they were also under the influence of other substances.

They were transported to the emergency room and then to the Gila County Juvenile Detention Center because they were both on probation.

Both were later charged with several felonies.

19 Year Old Caught Huffing Carburetor Cleaner in Arizona

The police blotter for January 27th notes an inhalant abuse incident. A 19 year old man was arrested for “for two felony warrants for probation violations and huffing carburetor cleaner.”

Teen Passes Out After Huffing In a Wal-Mart

Via ABC-15 in Arizona:

In Maricopa, a teen walked into a local Wal-Mart, picked-up a canister of CO2 (commonly used for pellet and paintball guns) and started inhaling from it within the store.

A store employee found the teen passed out in the sporting good section with an empty canister of CO2 beside him. The employee called 911 but before police arrived the teen came to and ran out of the store.

Arizona Man Chokes Woman After Huffing Dusters

Earlier this month a 27 year-old man was arrested in an inhalant abuse related incident.

Police responded to a call regarding a man threatening a woman with a knife. They found a woman crying in the driveway and saw a male run back inside the house. The woman told police the man had huffed two cans of computer duster so she asked him to leave. He became violent and verbally threatened her before grabbing her hair and choking her.

Police saw the man “pick up an aerosol can and inhale the vapor through a straw while the officer was negotiating with him to leave the home.” He was treated at the hospital for chemical inhalation and then arrested for unlawful imprisonment, aggravated assault, criminal damage, disorderly conduct, and assault, all per domestic violence.

Arizona Woman Arrested for Abusing Carburetor Cleaner

A 32-year old woman was arrested for huffing carburetor cleaner. Police were called and they found the woman on the steps of the courtyard of her apartment complex “with a can of carburetor cleaner and a scarf that she appeared to be holding up to her mouth and inhaling.”

The police report notes she told them she was trying to get high and she seemed "mellow and giggly." She was arrested on charges of inhaling a hazardous substance and possession of drug paraphernalia

Arizona Man Huffs Spray Paint, Throws Oranges at Planes

A 33 year-old man was caught huffing spray paint in an orange grove near Falcon Field Municipal Airport in Mesa.

Police saw the man drinking from a green jug but as they got closer they smelled spray paint and saw his upper lip. They confirmed he had been huffing spray paint from the jug. He also admitted he had been throwing oranges at the planes.

The report notes that the man was jittery and repeatedly said he was trying to get to New Mexico. When they tried to take him into custody, “he refused to put his hands on his head and walked away from the officers.” They finally wrestled him to the ground and took him to jail. He was charged with “possession of a vapor releasing substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and trespassing.”

Man Huffs Gasoline- Threatens To Kill Friends

Last Friday night, police arrested 31 year-old who had been huffing. He had been drinking beer with friends when they asked him to leave because he was huffing gasoline.

The police report notes he left, returned with a large knife and threatened to kill them. Police arrested him at the home and he was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
