St. George, UT - A man was arrested after hitting a gas pump causing an explosion and fleeing the scene. After eye-witness reports determined the location of the driver, police arrested him. Luckily due to joint law enforcement and fire department forces there were no injuries.

An 18-year-old driver in Utah was found trapped in his vehicle following a crash into a light pole and palm tree. The driver was huffing computer duster while driving and lost consciousness, causing the violent crash. Emergency personnel transported him to Dixie Regional Medical Center, where he remains.

Utah Man Causes 4-Car Accident While Huffing and Driving

A 37-year-old Utah man is believed to have been huffing and driving before causing a four-car accident. The man was heading northbound when he rear-ended the first car, also heading North. The man then veered into the southbound lanes hitting another car almost head on before spinning and hitting the third car. Two children, ages 9 and 10, were in the 1st car and hospitalized with serious injuries. A 30-year-old woman had to be extricated from the 2nd car and was also hospitalized with serious injuries. It's unclear how many people were in the third car, but no one was taken to the hospital.
Police believe the man was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time, and that he was actively using the inhalant while driving.

A 36-year-old Utah man was arrested for selling alcohol and whippets to a minor. Police discovered the minor in the man's house and the minor admitted to buying the whippet to inhale. The man was charged with selling and abusing a psycotoxic chemical and selling alcohol to a minor.

Man Arrested After Crashing SUV Into Wall

A man was arrested after huffing behind the wheel and crashing his SUV into a wall. He told officers that he had fallen asleep at the wheel and they noticed he was trying to kick a can of computer duster under the seat. After sobriety tests he admitted he had been huffing from the can prior to the crash. He was arrested, booked into jail and charged with a class B misdemeanor for driving under the influence and a class B misdemeanor for psychotoxic chemical abuse.

Huffing a Serious Addiction in Utah

The Orem Department of Public Safety has expressed concern over an increase in inhalant abuse in the region. They noted just a few of the multiple calls for "huffing" that they had received over the past two months.
In one case, a man had been inhaling from cans of computer duster for over 12 hours in a Wal-Mart bathroom. He had purchased some of the cans and had stolen the rest. He was taken to the hospital, released and an hour later was arrested for abusing inhalants in his car.
In another case a driver under the influence of inhalants had damaged his car, hit fences, street signs and parked cars. Another 30 year old individual was found in his garage huffing gasoline from his four-wheeler.

Head-on Collision in Utah Caused by Inhalant Abuse

Last week’s
head-on collision is being blamed on inhalant abuse. A 33 year old man was
allegedly huffing behind the wheel when he lost control of his car, drove up
over the curb, and ran over the landscaping of an area business. He then
crossed to the other side of the road, over the median and into oncoming
traffic.
Two police
officers in the area witnessed him drive head-on into a car driven by a woman
with two young children in the car. He was charged with DUI, psycho-toxic

the driver passed out, causing the car to crash into a house. The driver was

Police Catch Man Huffing and Driving

A man in Utah was cited for abusing a psychotoxic chemical after huffing while driving.
Police pulled the car over and saw the man holding a can of computer duster. They found several cans of duster in the car, and the police noted that it was lucky the man had not passed out or lost control of the vehicle. The man had been previously cited for huffing computer duster in a store.

As huffing refrigerant continues to grow in popularity among teens air conditioning companies are capping more and more units to prevent the disturbance.
In the last week four cases of missing refrigerant were reported.
For about $40 to $50 the lock can be installed for added security and peace of mind.

Driver Leads Emery Police on High Speed Chase, While High on Inhalants

On February 19 police in Emery County, Utah were dispatched to a hit and run incident. They were told that the offending vehicle (a pickup truck) had sideswiped an SUV and fled the scene.
In route to the call, officers observed a truck with half of a fence gate dragging behind the bumper. When officers pulled behind the vehicle in an attempt to stop the it, the driver of the vehicle accelerated in an attempt to lose the officers.
The vehicle then left the road and continued into the ditch before crossing into oncoming traffic, and eventually coming to rest in a wash near a home.
The driver refused to exit the vehicle and when police removed him, they noted that he appeared to have been high on inhalants.

51 Year Old Woman Found Huffing in Store Restroom

Earlier this week a 51-year old woman was taken to the hospital after she was found huffing computer dusters in an Office Depot restroom.
She bought cans of the product and then took them into the restroom. Employees of the store called police and the woman was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Utah has something to cheer about after a recent survey showed steady declines in inhalant abuse. The Student Health and Risk Prevention (SHARP) survey, a semi-annual assessment of youth drug use, captures information from sixth thru 12th grade students. The newest data indicates inhalant abuse declined by nearly 50% since 2007.
The encouraging trend was seen among 6th graders. The 2005 data showed 3.2 percent of sixth-graders repoted using inhalants. "In 2007 and 2009, that number at 2 percent. In 2009, the state reported 1.9 percent."

Utah police are monitoring an increase in a phenomenon known as huffing while driving whereby drivers huff inhalants whilst operating a vehicle. Police say the effects are similar to being drunk and, like alcohol, the effect can wear off quickly. The burgeoning practice has been reported in several parts of the United States as it gained popularity during the last two years. In one Utah town alone police reported at least six incidents over the past year.
However this trend is indicative of habits teens embraced before they got behind the wheel. Surveys conducted in Utah secondary schools found that 6 % of 6th graders and 9% of 8th graders had abused inhalants. This supports a national statistic which indicates inhalant usage amongst one in five middle school students.
A local health official believes a lack of awareness is largely to blame. He says, "We think to talk to our kids about alcohol use, we think to talk to them about marijuana, maybe other substances, but a lot of times we don't think to talk to them about inhalants."

Thieves Target Dental Offices

Police are investigating a string of unusual burglaries in Salt Lake City. According to news reports five dental offices have been robbed in the area over the past few weeks, with thieves stealing canisters of nitrous oxide, (also known as ‘laughing gas’) painkillers, and other miscellaneous drugs. Police are on the lookout for at least two men they believe have a small cache of drugs and nitrous and are urging residents to keep their eyes peeled for large canisters of gas. Police continue to investigate.
