Two West Virginia Men Were Burned While Huffing

Two men in Brushfork, West Virginia were burned after one of them requested a light to huff from a propane tank causing an explosion. The 59-year-old man drove away after the explosion. He burned himself and injured another man. No arrest has been made as the police are speaking to the sheriff about possible charges.

Ohio Man Burned After Huffing Related Fire

A 20-year-old Ohio man has burns over 65% of his body after huffing gasoline. When fire fighters arrived to the home they found the man naked in the living room. The man appeared disoriented and
starting back away from the first responders.
The man had been huffing gasoline in the basement of the home where there was a water heater and furnace. There was a flash fire, mostly contained around the mattress the man was sitting on. A water pipe burst put out the fire before crews arrived, possibly saving both the man and the house.
There were two adults and two children also inside the home, but they were safely evacuated. The man is listed in critical condition.

New Zealand Huffing Explosion Leaves Three Suffering From Burns

A serious huffing incident occurred in the South Auckland area of New Zealand. Two people were hospitalized with serious burns, and a third also received burns. Police say that seven people were huffing gasoline in a back shed. Neighbors heard a "whoosing" sound and then saw flames coming from the back of the property. The neighbors reported a smell of plastic after the fire started.
Papakura Police state, "We've come to the address and found a premises which bears sort of all the signs potentially a huffing incident that's kind of gone wrong."

Tennessee Woman Causes Apartment Fire While Huffing

A Chattanooga woman was arrested in connection with a March 29th apartment fire. The Captain says he and other firefighters noticed a strong smell of gasoline after an apartment fire was put out. He called the Fire Investigation Division to investigate. Evidence showed that one of the two occupants had been huffing gasoline in the bathroom.
The person huffing lit up in the bathroom and due to the room full of gas fumes, a fire erupted. The two occupants in the apartment at the time were not injured.
Following the investigation, officials went to arrest the woman occupant. Officials say she and her husband were evicted from the apartment complex and were staying at a local hotel. When officials arrived at the hotel they could smell gas fumes and the woman refused to answer the door. Investigators entered through a window and arrested her. They found two one-gallon containers full of gas inside the room. She faces six counts of reckless endangerment due to the danger she put the other apartment residents in.

Georgia Man Huffs Propane, Burns Self and Burns Down House

This past weekend, a man severely burned himself after
huffing propane. As a result his house also burned down and was declared a
total loss.
A witness reported the man passed out while huffing propane,
leaving the valve on the propane bottle open. When he woke up he lit a
cigarette igniting the fire. The man was pulled to safety and suffered bad

The young man who allegedly started the accident was huffing gas from a car gas tank using a garden hose and mistakenly got gasoline on his clothes. When he later lit a cigarette in his room, he set himself on fire and consequently the rest of the house.

Huffing Causes Explosion and Fire in Oregon

A 52 year-old man was cited after his huffing caused an explosion and small fire. He had been building a fire near railroad tracks while huffing computer dusting spray he had stolen from a nearby Rite Aid. He passed out and the container rolled into the fire and caused a loud explosion. The fire then spread to nearby grass and bushes.
The man was was cited for "reckless burning, third degree theft, and for unlawful possession of inhalants." The article also points out he was "released at the scene due to jail overcrowding."

The report states, "They were inhaling the air sprayer that you clean your computer with and getting high, and they set three or four fires inside the building."

Man Does Not Learn Lesson, Caught Inhaling Solvent Again

In an update to the Oct. 11 post, “Man Inhales Solvent, Home Catches Fire,” police were again called to the same house for strange odor. The same man was found inhaling a flammable solvent commonly used as starter fluid for gasoline and diesel engines in a closed room. He was not charged for the previous incident but this time was taken into custody and brought to a hospital "for medical and psychological evaluation.” He was charged with two counts of disorderly persons and one count of creating risk of widespread injury.

A man’s home caught fire after he inhaled a volatile solvent from aerosol cans. He was rescued by a police officer who also carried his pets to safety. “The levels of the solvent — identified by police as heptane ether, a flammable solvent commonly used as starter fluid for gasoline and diesel engines — were so high the house was condemned by the building department.”
The danger was discovered when the homeowner’s wife had arrived home called police to report a strange odor in the house then waited outside for the police to arrive. The officer had to be hospitalized for his injuries and placed off-duty. The homeowner was also hospitalized and charged with disorderly conduct and being under the influence of an inhalant.

Police Suspect 'Huffing' in Explosion

Last week an 18-year-old man was seriously injured after his vehicle exploded in the parking lot of a retail store early Monday morning. Police are investigating as to whether or not the young man was ‘huffing’ prior to the explosion. In his statement to police, the teen claimed “he had filled the car with gasoline and pulled into a nearby parking lot to light a cigarette when his car caught fire.”
Despite invoking a powerful explosion that “blew out the car’s windshield and bent out the frames to the four side windows” no damage was done to the store, the parking lot, or any other surrounding vehicles. The teen is currently being treated at an area burn center where doctors are assessing his injuries.
Police have impounded the teen’s car to further examine the cause of explosion, and are working alongside local firefighters to collect any evidence that may attribute the incident to ‘huffing.’

'Huffer' Throws Propane Tank Off Building

Police have arrested a man they believe was high from “huffing intoxicants” when two officers witnessed him throw a propane gas tank off the top of a midtown Tulsa building early last week. The suspect is expected to be charged with arson in connection to a fire he ignited with chemicals while loitering on the roof. Area firefighters were called to the scene and quickly extinguished the flames. A ladder truck was needed to secure the suspect into police custody. Authorities are still investigating the incident.

A New Mexico man who set his 19-year-old nephew on fire now faces a charge of attempted murder. The incident occurred early last week after a fight broke out between the two men. The suspect allegedly “threw gasoline on [the teen] during the argument” and proceeded to light him on fire. Police say the suspect then fled on foot, and was found “two hours later holding a clear plastic bottle containing gasoline.” Several unidentified witnesses informed police that the suspect was “huffing gas vapors at the time of the incident.”
The burnt teen is being treated for second and third degree burns to his face, neck, and arms, and has undergone several skin grafts to repair the damage. It is not yet clear if the suspect will also face charges related to ‘huffing.’

Witnesses divulged to police that the suspect was indeed sniffing petroleum at the time of the incident, allowing investigators to determine that remaining deposits of fuel located on the suspect’s face triggered the fire that left him with 3rd degree burns to over ten percent of his body.
The suspect is currently being hospitalized in Western Australia and remains in critical condition despite his close encounter with death. He is being charged with “assault to prevent arrest and possession of [an intoxicating] sniffing substance.”

Five Female Teens Caught Huffing

Battalion County School officials and local police caught five teenage girls huffing an unknown substance on Wednesday. The teens experienced impairments in their judgment, sense of reality, and overall ability to process information sufficiently.
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) notes the importance of communication and education surrounding youths in light of the recent number of duster deaths. LAFD encourages parents to take a more active role in the programs presently in place within local school districts to assist in educating others on the impact this issue has on consumer education.
According to the Partnership for Drug Free America “inhalant abuse has increased by 44 percent in over the last year within middle schools alone”.

Rapid City Fire
A house caught on fire yesterday afternoon in Rapid City, South Dakota as a direct result of one of the residents inhaling paint fumes. The fumes ignited and both he and his visitor were sent to the hospital with lung issues and minor burns. Although ACE is primarily concerned with the bodily harm involved with abusing inhalants, this provides an example of other risks involved. Many inhalants are flammable and should not be used around open flames. Luckily, it appears that the injuries were minimal.
