Georgia Officials Warn of Inhalant Abuse Linked Health Risks
Officials in Georgia warn that teens who abuse various
household items. In particular they want to spread awareness of sudden sniffing
death syndrome. As its name suggests, it occurs when people inhale certain
substances that cause rapid damage to the cardiovascular system.
Furthermore, officials describe how many teens and preteens
are attempting to get drunk on alcohol-based hand sanitizer. In response to the
rise of this action, these officials are warning parents and educators that
this action can be quite harmful since it the alcohol in hand sanitizer is not
meant for human consumption.

Georgia Man Arrested After Inhaling Carburetor Cleaner in Van

A man in Roswell, Georgia was arrested on Saturday October 3,
2015 after police found him unconscious in the back of a work van. According to
local reports, he had huffed carburetor cleaner to the point that the
responding officers were overwhelmed by the fumes when they opened the van
doors.
Soon after finding the man, police took the man to the
hospital. After he was given time to recover, they took the man to a local jail
where he spent two days before being bonded out. Currently he is facing charges
of huffing an illegal inhalant.

Georgia Man Found Unconscious After Huffing

A 22 year-old Georgia man was arrested after being found lying unconscious in the woods.
The man was reported to have been lying in a parking lot when police were called. The man allegedly began fighting with an off-duty officer before running off into the woods. He was lying on his back in the woods when on-duty officers arrived and walked into the woods to follow him. According to police the man, "was unresponsive and (his) eyes were rolled to the back of his head." The man had a can of dusting spray in his hand. As the police removed the can from his hand he became responsive. He was able to walk with the police, but was unaware of what was going on.
Earlier in the day, the man had been suspected of shoplifting at Walmart and Target and had been escorted to the hospital due to huffing aerosol products from the stores. The man refused medical attention during the second arrest. He was issued a criminal trespass warning, arrested, and jailed on charges of loitering and public drunkenness.

Georgia Man Huffs Propane, Burns Self and Burns Down House

This past weekend, a man severely burned himself after
huffing propane. As a result his house also burned down and was declared a
total loss.
A witness reported the man passed out while huffing propane,
leaving the valve on the propane bottle open. When he woke up he lit a
cigarette igniting the fire. The man was pulled to safety and suffered bad

Georgia Man Huffs Inhalants From Bag and Rolls on Ground Screaming

A 33 year old man was arrested last Tuesday after he was “found
high from huffing fumes and scaring people by his strange behavior near a bus
stop.” A Georgia Bureau of Investigations agent was driving in the area when he
saw the man spray an aerosol can into a bag then huff from the bag. He then
began to scream and roll around on the ground. The agent notified police who
then arrested the man on charges of intentionally inhaling fumes, public
intoxication and disorderly conduct.

Georgia Man Found Huffing in Locked Car

A 27 year old man was arrested earlier this month after
police found him slumped over in a car that was stopped in the middle of the
road.
The officer tried to open the car door but it was locked and
the driver’s “eyes were dilated and he looked confused or dazed.” When the man
would not stop huffing from a can of computer duster, the officer broke the
window to gain access to the car. The
man resisted officers’ attempts to remove him from the car until they earned
him he would be tased. He’s being
charged with DUI and impeding the flow of traffic.

Atlanta Teens Huffing From Air Conditioners

Six high school students are facing charges after they were found vandalizing a home air conditioning unit in an attempt to get high.
The homeowner heard noises on the back deck and saw teens “rolling around on the ground, having a hard time standing up” and “The one kid who was laying behind the unit had his mouth against it and just sucking it in.” He took photos of the teens from the window and when he went outside to confront them they were disoriented and dazed.
When the teens ran off they left their book bags behind which is how the police were able to identify them. They have been charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass, destruction of property and theft. The home owner notes it is the second time in two weeks he has caught teens huffing the refrigerant out of his air conditioner.

Georgia Teens Burn Down Historic Mill After Abusing Inhalants

On May 12th, four males ages 17-20, set fire to 100 year-old cotton mill after huffing computer dusting spray.
The report states, "They were inhaling the air sprayer that you clean your computer with and getting high, and they set three or four fires inside the building."
The teens will be charged with second-degree arson and interference with government property.

Huffing, Shoplifting, and Car Theft in Georgia

A 26-year-old man in Georgia faces charges of car theft, shoplifting, probation violation, and improper use of a substance.
Police were called to investigate a shoplifting report when they found the man inhaling from a computer duster can in his car. Police later found 25 empty cans in the young man's car.
Because the man was highly intoxicated, police took him to the hospital. Police left the man at the emergency room, and they planned on charging him with shoplifting after he received medical attention. The man fled the hospital and found an unlocked car with the keys inside. He drove away from the hospital, but crashed into the woods.
The man then attempted to escape on foot, but the police department's K-9 unit caught up with him. Police learned that the man had been on probation in another county and now faces additional charges.

Two Fort Benning soldiers are being charged in a fatal inhalant related crash.
Last Saturday the 20 and 27 year males allegedly “spent the hours before the wreck on a drinking and huffing binge, taking shots of Jack Daniel’s whiskey and inhaling nitrous oxide from balloons.” The crash resulted in the death of a 55 year old father of seven.
One of the men told police he couldn’t remember the crash but he described the events leading up to it. After a trip to the mall they stopped to buy whiskey and began taking shots in the parking lot. They finished the bottle while driving around the town. They then purchased nitrous oxide capsules and stopped at another store to buy balloons from which to inhale the gas. Upon inspection, police found 14 empty ““Supercharger” nitrous oxide canisters.
They took at least three hits apiece, stopped to buy energy drinks, and then stopped at another liquor store where they purchased another bottle of whiskey.
They were speeding and swerving through traffic when they struck a car from behind, pushing it into oncoming traffic where it was hit head-on. They continued driving, causing another collision and in total injuring seven people in the crashes.

The county grand jury returned a 16 count indictment against a 16 year old male after an inhalant related crash on July 1, 2011 that killed a Florida girl and seriously injured several members of her family. One of the charges included driving under the influence of an inhalant.

Teen Dies After Night of Drug Binge

A 15-year-old boy died after a night of inhaling dust cleaner, smoking marijuana, drinking bourbon, and ingesting prescription medication. He and a 14-year-old friend had partied that night beginning at 5:30 PM. The 14-year-old went inside his house after 10PM, assuming his friend would walk to his own house a few blocks away. The friend awoke the next morning to find the 15-year-old still in his backyard, not breathing and unresponsive. The exact cause of death has not yet been determined, however, any one of the illegal substances could have caused the death.

Woman Huffs Herself Back to the Authorities
A woman was charged with intentionally inhaling model glue 9 hours after being released on bail for a similar incident.
The 23-year-old woman was spotted huffing behind a restaurant by an employee. When the employee called for help the woman took off.
Authorities found the woman across the street with the nozzle of the can in her mouth, she was then charged.
This same woman was charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident, driving without a license (second offense), driving with a suspended tag, failure to maintain lane, two counts of reckless driving and DUI (second offense)just a month ago.

A surge in teens huffing has prompted Poison Control to add freon to the list of abused inhalants.
Freon is a refrigerant used in air conditioners.
The number of cases of teens pumping the refrigerant out of air conditioners to get high is on the rise.
Officials say it can be deadly after one dose.
According to the Director of the Georgia Poison Control, there has been an increase in inhalant abuse cases from five in 2009 and 2010 to six through May of this year.
The Poison Center stated that there had been no reported deaths in Georgia from huffing refrigerant just yet.

Lee County to Ban Huffing

Leaders in Lee County, Georgia have recognized the dangers of huffing and want to create legislation to prevent it.
The ordinance lists 30 products that once enacted, will be illegal to inhale. These substances will be added to the glue ordinance already in existence.
Those that are caught violating the city ordinance will be subject to 60 days in jail as well as $1000 in fines.
Commissioners will make their final vote next week on the status of the ordinance.

A Georgia newspaper reported an unusual loophole that may make a man eligible as a third party incumbent. After unsuccessfully trying to run as a Republican and Democrat candidate, the 47-year old elected to campaign as a write-in candidate after he voiced concerns about not receiving enough signatures before the March 31 deadline.
What's more interesting is the reason he was not invited as a Republican candidate: his criminal record. The man, who is also a truck driver, was charged with possession of a volatile substance in 2003. When confronted the man claimed the duster was intended to clean his tape deck. The officer disagreed, noting the container contained an inhalant.

Man Arrested Twice in 24-Hours

A 45-year-old Covington man was arrested twice in a span of 24-hours last month after being caught “intentionally inhaling model glue fumes and driving while under the influence of multiple substances.”
According to police reports, officers first found the suspect ‘huffing’ in a parked minivan outside of a local retail store. As officers approached the vehicle the suspect continued to “inhale vigorously;” appearing very “disoriented and confused.” Following a complete search of the minivan, police recovered 8-11 canisters of aerosol, various prescription medications, and an empty bottle of liquor. The suspect, who was placed into police custody and released later that day, admitted to having huffed the contents of 8 cans in the hours leading up to his arrest.
The following day, the 45-year-old was arrested for his involvement in a “one-vehicle traffic accident.” A resident called police after witnessing a minivan drive over a mailbox and flee the scene. The witness also noticed the driver was ‘huffing’ from a can of computer duster.
Police were able to track down the suspect in his minivan parked outside of a local grocery store. He was arrested and charged with “driving under the influence of multiple substances, striking a fixed object, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident.” As of November 25 the suspect remained in jail.
