Huffing & Driving: A Fatal Combination

From the Philly.com Daily News in Pennsylvania

Last month, a 20 year old female lost control of her car and drove onto a sidewalk at Delaware County Memorial Hospital striking two female pedestrians; killing one and critically injuring the other. Nicole Gallo, 19 of Clifton Heights was killed instantly when Rachael Jankins, 20 veered off the road, crossed two lanes of traffic, and hit Gallo from behind. Gallo's 20 year old friend sustained multiple injuries from the crash "including a broken back."

Jankins initially told police that she had been “searching for her iPod” prior to the incident; but toxicology reports reveal traces of the chemical difluoroethane to have been present in her system at the time of the crash- a chemical found in computer dusting products. Police also recovered a can of computer duster from the vehicle. Jankins could face charges of vehicular homicide and manslaughter in connection to the crash.

This is not the first time area residents have been confronted with the dangerous reality of inhalant abuse. In 1999, five high school juniors were killed when the car they were riding in hit a tree. The driver and three passengers were found to have difluoroethane in their blood. A can of computer duster was found in the car.

In 2001, a 17 year old honors student was killed when her truck hit a tree after she had been inhaling computer duster.

Attack Leaves Victim in the ER

From the Arab Tribune in Alabama:

A 36 year old male was arrested earlier this week after he allegedly attacked a 23 year old female companion, causing her to seek immediate medical attention. Law enforcement officers were informed of the incident by emergency room doctors who cited the victim’s multiple bruises and bite marks as a clear sign of imposed physical trauma.

The victim was able to identify her attacker, allowing police to detain the suspect on charges of sexual abuse and sodomy. The victim later disclosed to police that she believed her attacker was under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident, and “had been ‘huffing’ gasoline prior to the assault.

Driver Huffs and then Crashes into Mom and Baby

From the Billings Gazette in Montana:

Last November a 16 year-old male driver “lost control of his car and struck a woman and toddler on a sidewalk.” He had told the judge he had been text messaging when the accident occurred.

Later it was revealed that he “may have blacked out while huffing” computer dusting spray. The Deputy County Attorney noted he “may also have been trying to send a text message immediately before the accident, but phone records did not show any activity on the phone at the time.”

The driver explained that he had been huffing in the car with a friend. He dropped his friend off at home and “wanted to have one more hit.” The next thing he knew he had struck a woman and her 15-month-old son.

The child “suffered a broken leg and concussion and was in intensive care for 3 days.” The mom “suffered a fractured hand and concussion.”

The driver was sentenced to a youth detention facility until he turns 18. He was also ordered to pay a total of $3,350 in restitution, attend a treatment program and write a letter of apology to the victim.”
