Whip-Its Legal, Sold to Undercover Intern

FOX News featured an undercover report on Whip Its (or 'whippits'), the nitrous oxide containers usually intended for whipped cream cainsters. They went incognito to an "alternative novelty shop" called Retro Active in St. Peters, Missouri.

The store clerk claimed that the whippits "give you this weird type of high", and told the undercover agent that in order to get high, you "put the balloon in your mouth and it shoots."

The whippits were sold with a tool used to release the nitrous oxide inside to make it easier to inhale. According to the clerk, "these are crackers, that's how you break them. When you put a balloon over top then it fills up the balloon and then you put the balloon in your mouth and it shoots."

FOX said that it didn't want to give "step by step instructions" but that parents "need to see the tools so you can spot potential problems with your kids".

They also interviewed Joe Amos, who is a former whippit abuser. He said that if "if I saw one that definitely they're using them to get high."

As for the crackers, "I have no other idea what you'd use that for. I think it's made specifically for that."

Because they are legal, some have the idea that it is safe to inhale the nitrous oxide. Amos said that several of his friends had parents that "actually bought them for them for Christmas ha ha, because it wasn't illegal and it's not pot."

The article describes how the internet is full of tutorials and videos of people abusing inhalants, and "one web site even lists the 'do's and don'ts' so you can avoid situations where 'people have died doing this.'"

FOX's undercover agent asked another salesperson why she was selling the whippits in the store. She answered that it was "cause I get informed, this is what you do while you work here."

The clerk who had instructed FOX's correspondant on how to use the whippit also may have just been following the rules, because he said "it just gave me a really bad headache. I just didn't like it that much."

There was no response from the owner of the store. FOX had notified authorities but doubts that there will be any prosecution.

Should whippits be made illegal? Should only the tools used to facilitate their abuse be restricted? What about online sales of whipped cream canisters? It is a good idea to recognize the cracker so that if you see one, you can immediately identify it. A quick image search for 'cracker' brings up not only pictures of it (they look like metallic canisters, about the size of a battery) but also many sites including eBay where you can buy both the cracker and nitrous oxide canisters.

Are you serious? NO2 is not a dirty "inhalent" it is an anesthetic and extremely safe. Nothing more needs to be done with the war on drugs. It's time to dismantle the legislature, not add to it.

I had to break into my 48 yr old brothers house because he was paralyzed alone on the floor for 3+ days after chronic whip-it use. He is in treatment and with time hopefully will walk normally again. After falling and lack of oxygen probably had multiple strokes too. Harmless, right?!

Yeah, if all you do is inhale whipits all day, then it's dangerous. It's called oxygen deprivation. You can't blame n20 for the fact that your brother obviously made an ignorant decision.

yea, everyting is about knwoing your body and knowing your limits.... and not being ignorant to what you are doing...... while I'm saddened that this happened to your brother, he should have known better... it's the same with anything, alcohol, food, drugs, over use is a bad thing....

My cousin died yesterday from using Whip its. How's that for ya!

Your cousin died? Wow!! This is the same drug they give to laboring mother's and dental patients. Highly unlikely it has ever killed anyone due to toxicity. Did your cousin fall down, put a mask on and asphyxiate or are you just full of BS? The only way that a whipit could kill would be from extended oxygen deprivation, but our friend H2O will do that to you just as fast. lol

Tis true whipits cant kill you you gotta be a moron to die from whipits...

It's harmful to only use nitrous...in the dental office it's combined with equal amount of oxygen at the same time that is why it is safe..and I'm a dental assistant so I know this

Sounds as though too many of you have been using whippits too long. Whippits do kill brain cells, and can cause asphyxiation. Dentists do use N20, but it is mixed with oxygen. But if a dentist or doctor uses it on patients, it must be okay to huff it without any consequences. If you believe that then all of you need to go back to school instead of huffing chemicals all day long, idiots!!!

Everyone's bodies are different, some people might get strokes, some might just get light headed, and some might die. One of my old using friends just became paralyzed from constant whip it use. Once again going back to knowing your limit, but how many hardcore drug addicts know there limits? Cuz if they did they wouldn't be hardcore addicts...

I have done them a few different times. My bf and I would buy a 50 pack and have fun at home watching movies and chilling for the night. And everything was always ok. Until last night. It had been awhile, not like I was doing them back to back, but I had a stroke off my first balloon. It was completely random. Luckily I'm a paramedic and I noticed what was happening and was able to treat it. But I have to say after this and it being completely randomly. As much fun as I did have doing them I won't be doing them anymore and neither will my bf or any of my friends or family; all of us were doing them for fun before. I used to be pro whip its. But now I know for a fact that they are indeed dangerous and could easily kill someone.
