Inhalant Abuse Common Amongst Youth in Indianan County

In a study done by by the Community Research and Service Center at Valparaiso University for Porter County, it was found that "1.4 percent of sixth graders reported monthly use of inhalants, 5.9 percent of 10th graders did, and 1.3 percent of 12th graders did; on the other hand, 2.5 percent of sixth graders reported using inhalants at least once, 10.5 percent of eighth graders did, and 12.4 percent of 12th graders did."

This study was done as an assessment to see what contributing factors may cause youth to involve themselves in risky behavior later in life.

Parolee At Large Found Huffing Keyboard Cleaner

A man was found huffing keyboard cleaner in a park.

When police arrived, the 20-year-old man gave a false name leading them to find a warrant under the his correct name.

He was arrested with a parolee at large charge and is held with no bail.

Glue Sniffing on the Rise in Fiji

Of 2147 primary school students, 24 percent had sniffed glue and benzene according to research done by the Ministry of Education's substance abuse division.

Overall there was a decrease in substance abuse by students.

Mailman Becomes a Victim of Huffer's Actions

A man admitted to huffing after reportedly trying to jump into a mail truck.

The man approached a parked mail truck and began to knock on the window with his elbow as if trying to break through the glass.

The man then tried to enter the mail truck and reportedly acted as if he was going to assault the mail carrier.

The mailman tried to drive away but the suspect held onto the vehicle.

When police arrived the man was found on a nearby porch and was taken into custody for public intoxication and huffing.

Teen Taken Into Custody for Public Intoxication

A 17-year-old boy was taken into custody for public intoxication after huffing spray paint.

The 17-year-old boy was left unconscious in the car meanwhile, his friend, another 17 year-old male, attempted to break into an unmarked police vehicle. The boy fled once realizing that officers were in the vehicle.

The second teen was charged with complaints of burglary, attempted burglary and possession of a controlled and dangerous substance

Both boys were caught and taken into custody.

Registered Nurse Arrested for Huffing

A woman arrested for huffing is also a registered nurse.

The registered nurse was found unconscious in her car with the engine running in a parking lot. She had reportedly bought a can of aerosol keyboard cleaner not too long before.

When police arrived they found 43 cans in her vehicle.

The nurse reportedly was in the area for a nursing convention and had learned about inhalant abuse from watching Dr. Phil.

She's charged with abusing a hazardous substance.

Three Men Face Drug Charges After Huffing Incident

A man spotted huffing an aersol spray in a McDonalds drive thru led to three men are facing drug charges.

According to police a McDonald's employee spotted a man huffing from a can while in the drive thru line.

When police arrived all three men in the vehicle were questioned. The driver passed field sobriety tests but when one of the passengers was asked to step outside of the car a prescription pain killer was found on his seat.

After all three men denied ownership of the pill several others were found in the car, along with a used canister of industrial strength aerosol spray.

All three men were arrested and the man reported to be huffing faces an additional charge for allegdly inhaling toxic vapors.

Unconscious Person Reported in Home Depot

Police received a report about an unconscious person in a Home Depot.

The unconscious person was a 41-year-old woman who had been huffing dust cleaner in the store. She was reportedly found collapsed in the floral section.

When a man awoke her, she began huffing more dust cleaner. The man then tried to take the can from her possession, prompting her to get up off the ground knocking over two flower pots in the process.

The woman then fled the store.

When police arrived she was found walking through a wooded embankment where she confessed to huffing cans but was unable to show proof of purchase for each can in her possession.

Man Slumps Over Wheel in Intersection

A 25-year-old man is facing charges for second degree reckless endangerment and possession with the intent to abuse a hazardous substance, intentional abuse of a hazardous substance, disorderly conduct and possession of marjiuana after a huffing incident.

Police were contacted about a man who had passed out in an intersection. When the police arrived they found the man slumped over the wheel in the far left lane of a busy high speed road.

When the man began to regain consciousness, he huffed out of a can of dust cleaner. The police then knocked the can out his hands and forced him outside the vehicle.

The police also found marijuana and pills inside the vehicle.

Within 2 weeks a 23-year-old man was cited twice by police for huffing.

On his first offense the man was found passed out in a parking lot.
Officers found the same man huffing an aerosol cleaner in a public restroom weeks later.

The man was cited for inhalant use.

Man Sentenced to Prison for Vehicular Homicide Induced by Inhalant

Man gets sentenced to 6 years in prison for a vehicular homicide induced by marijuana and inhalants.

The man plead guilty to having marijuana and difluoroethane (a chemical found in keyboard cleaner) in his system.

According to reports, the man bought the keyboard cleaner from a local Wal-Mart and huffed the contents in the restroom before operating his vehicle.

Once on the road he crossed into oncoming traffic killing the victim.

The victim left behind his wife and two young daughters.

Woman Huffs Nail Polish Remover While Driving

A 27-year-old woman was charged with abusing harmful intoxicants, driving under suspension, driving outside of the marked lanes and not wearing a seat belt after she was found huffing nail polish remover while operating her vehicle.

Police received a report that a driver had been weaving in and out of lanes on a state route. When authorities arrived to the scene, the woman was weaving over the lane divider.

The woman was arrested.

Man Forces Sexual Abuse Victim to Huff Fly Spray

A man in Rotorua is accused of forcing his 13-year-old victim to huff fly spray before sexually assaulting her.

The man plead not guilty to sexually violating the girl in her own home.

The victim reports after many attempts by the aggressor to try to get her to inhale the spray, she finally gave in.

The victim reports feeling dazed after inhaling the substance and at that time the man sexually abused her.

The case is still on trial.

High Speed Chase Led By Woman Under the Influence of Inhalants

A 45-year-old woman was sentenced May 26 after leading authorities on a 110-mph chase while huffing computer duster.

The woman was sentenced to three years in prison and two years probation on the counts of DUI, fleeing or attempting to elude police, resisting arrest and causing an accident to an unattended vehicle.

The woman fled the scene after striking another vehicle while turning. After police were called she was found and pulled over. When the trooper approached her she refused to put her window down, screamed obscenities at him and accelerated away almost hitting the officer.

She then lost control and crashed into an embankment. When a trooper arrived she sped away almost hitting him as well.

The chase continued on as she weaved in and out of lanes on both sides of the road. When police finally caught up with her they had to break her window and force her out of the car to arrest her.

The woman had a number of cans in the vehicle and was under the influence during the arrest.

The woman plead guilty leading to her sentence.

Women Beats Son After Discovering His Inhalant Abuse

A mother is in custody after allegedly beating and biting her 19-year-old son upon the discovery that he huffs dust remover.

The son received blows to the face prompting him to flee their apartment.
The mother then found out his whereabouts and ended up tackling him to the ground where she then bit him.

The woman had a blood alcohol content of 0.155 during a breath test after the incident.

The mother faces 1st degree burglary, 2nd degree harrassment and domestic violence.

The number caught went from 600 in 2009 to 499 in 2011.
